So i am on the hunt for a drill press. I have started 2 other threads about different used drill presses. One didnt workout and the other one was just ****. It just seems that my search for a GOOD used drill press is not really working out. So with that said......

Tell me what NEW drill press i should buy. Better yet, tell me which one NOT to buy. Ive looked at craftsman, delta, Shop Fox, Jet, Powermatic, foremost, Grizzly, and im sure some others that i cant think of right now. I just cant decide which one i want. I will be drilling mostly metal. But definitly the occasional pieces of wood. I want to try and keep it under 500 bucks if possible.

HELP!!!!
THANKS, BRIAN

It sounds like you should be looking for a good used variable speed Powermatic.

All of the new units in the price range you are looking at are probably not up to the performance you are expecting.

I have a Rigid I bought at Home Depot. I'm happy with it. I use it to drill steel. Anything that will handle steel will handle wood. I don't remember what I paid for it but it was in the range you are thinking about. I think around 300.

For up to 500 bucks you should be able to find a great older used drill press - something solid like an old powermatic, or buffalo, delta rockwell etc. They pop up all the time, except for when you want one ;) Most of that new crapinese stuff is well crapinese.

That tool craft looks pretty nice. Not sure about getting it shipped though if i went that route.

Does anybody have one of the newer Powermatics Drill Presses. They look pretty good for an extra couple hundred bucks. But on a lot of web sites they advertise that they are for woodworking, And they never mention useing them for metal. Does that mean that you can not use it for metal at all?

PowerMatic makes some nice stuff, as long as the press can spin slow enough for metal you will be able to use it.
