Ok screwdriver geniuses, what is this?

I found this little beauty in my Father in Laws basement closet, hidden in an old cigar box.
It has GER stamped on the shoulder of the blade.

Could be Scandinavian in origin. In the fifties, that part of world produced a lot of beautifully designed objects.

First patented by HD Smith (which became Tobrin) and copied by everyone, most prominently IRWIN, in the US, but also many foreign tool makers. I'd bet the "GER" is GERMANY.

Sears sold a three-piece set of these many years ago. I still have the set. It was not Craftsman but rather an imported set.

Those were sold through Garrett Wade a catalog tool retailer that has fallen by the wayside over the years. These were advertised as "demolition" indestructible screw drivers, for guys that don't use screw drivers for screwing screws...

Very interesting. I have one from my grandfather that looks identical. I've never noticed a stamp on it, but will have to look when I get home. I've always thought that it felt very well made.

I have a couple of flat blade drivers like that from my father, with that type of shank/ handle. Can't remember if they are Irwin or Stanley but looks like the one shiftless posted. I'll try to remember to snap a pic of it. Its one of my large flat blades, still kicking after 40-50 years, and don't think they can beat that design.

Pretty popular with wood working guys I guess.

My wife bought me a three piece set that looked very similar about thirty years ago. No markings and I don't remember a brand name. I do remember the package had "Forever Screwdrivers" on it. They are not fine tools, but any time I need to use a screwdriver out in the yard I reach for one of these. I even managed to leave one beside the fish pond for about six months. I buffed the rust off, oiled the wooden handle and put it back in the screwdriver drawer.
