I didn't think I would ever do this but last week I was relic hunting and had to wade through 1000 feet of tall swamp grass, several creeks, and knee deep mud to get to the spot we wanted to hunt and some where along the way my phone case got dislodged from my belt and it is now lost forever. My bride went to the phone store to get me a replacement and since it was my birthday she decided to get me one of these new fangled I Pad things.

I hadn't even learned all the things the old phone would do and now I have to figure this thing out. What I'm wondering is what kind of protective case do you guys use? She got one of those otter boxes and it does seem tough enough I want something a little less bulky and something a little more water proof. I have been known to drop a phone or two in buckets of water, paint and who knows what else. I would also like to be able to carry my phone while wading the creeks when hunting which sometimes means full immersion of body and equipment so it needs to be somewhat waterproof and of course it needs to be fairly impact resistant also because I have been known to fall off a roof or two.

Most times when you go into the woods you never know what you will come across and I don't want to be limited to where and what I do because of my phone. I had to leave my old phone hidden under a rock a couple times in the past because the conditions were to bad for the case it was in. Sometimes that means another 4 or 5 mile hike back into the woods to retrieve my phone and I'm getting too damn old for that.

You mean IPhone?
If so you want the LifeProof case, it is the only waterproof case.

Re: OK.....who has got I Pads

If I'm out doing anything active, I make sure the phone is in a zipper pocket of some type (inside jacket pocket, biking backpack, soft cooler on the boat, etc.).

If you mean iPhone, the lifeproof case is good and relatively compact. I have several friends that have them and I've got one on an older IPhone 4. They did find the limits of this case, however, sailing small catamarans in the Keys recently with the phone in a lifejacket pocket. After several capsizes (weather was really tough) and all the water spray, the water found it's way into the phone case. Mine was fine tucked away in a small pelican case tied and stored on the boat.

Yeah, Iphone:eek:

I looked at those on several sites but wanted to hear from people that have actually had them. There seems to be a lot of talk about crappy belt clips and that's why I lost my other one in the first place. I can't carry a phone in my pocket especially on long hard walks through some of the stuff we have to go through so I need something that is going to hang on to me and not fall off in thick brush.

Yeah, I used to store my phone or other things that I didn't want to get wet in a waterproof zip lock bag but I have limited space when afoot. My machine, digging shovel, pro pointer, junk bag, bag for good stuff, water jug. In the summer I don't wear a jacket, it's just too hot and there is only so much you can hang off your belt so I have to find something that has a good belt loop attachment that can't get dislodged.

The main reason I want to carry it is because of the GPS. It's the only way to find some places we want to hunt so it's another piece of gear just like my relic machine. I'll probably just resort to taking the phone out of the belt loop part of the otter case and put he phone in a zip lock bag and carry it in my back pocket which is not as uncomfortable as carrying it in a front pant pocket.

Otterbox for impact resistance and for water repellency, Rustoleum Neverwet (search for the iphone video). I wouldn't actually try that with mine, but you'll at least enjoy the video! :)

Re: OK.....who has got iPads?

Thumbs down on the Lifeproof case with the tempered glass. I just recently got the iphone 5 with the lifeproof case, and took it off shortly after. One of the drawbacks was the drowning out of the speaker, it distorted the speaker in such a way where it almost sounds like the speaker is blown,( Sounded like Charlie Browns teacher speaking) I googled the lifeproof case after I had bought it( My mistake) and it had a tremendous amount of negative reviews. the most common complaint was the speaker problem. If they perfected the speaker problem, then I would buy it again, it is a little pricey, I believe it was like $60 bucks. On the plus side it does take a beating as I had dropped it several times on concrete with no damage at all.

This is false, there is an Otterbox Armour series available for the iphone. On top of being waterproof, it is also crush resistant.
Otterbox Armour Series

If you want all of that in a phone case, you are likely not going to get one that isn't bulky. Lifeproof isn't too bulky, but from what I know it is not crush resistant. The Otterbox armour series actually has parts of it that are metal(including the latches that hold it closed).

I had a comando (sp) I believe it was the only mil spec smart phone. It was dropped many times.guy I work with forgot his in dirty pants and it went thru wash with flying colors. I saw vids on you tube where people threw it in a whirlpool tub and left it in for a while while on and when pulled it out it was still going.one tuff phone.mine was ran over in a gravel lot.i picked it up and was bummed when I turned it over and the screen was all messed up. I looked closer and it was the screen saver that was crunched up.i peeled it off and it was fine.had a bunch of gouges in case but never hurt the phone.have an iPhone now and afraid of breaking it...jim

Kyocera Hydro is one; F-in-L had one; worked well.

Most advertised is Galaxy S4 from a particular phone service vendor; can't remember which.

When I have to be out in bad weather I keep a ziplock bag handy to put my phone in. Usually the case when riding the motorcycle or hiking when the weather might turn sour. I love the iPhone but it's about as fragile as a piece of chalk.

I second the Zip Lock bag. Normally I just carry the phone in a $2 silicone case. that takes care of 99% of drops. i have dropped my phone on to concrete many times. When I am in inclimate conditions, or sweating a lot I use a simple zip lock bag as it keeps out the moisture. A bonus is the touchscreen still works through the plastic so you can still text/web etc. You do need to take it out of the bag to talk though.

Re: OK.....who has got iPads?

I used an Otterbox Defender series case for a little while. It was NOT my favorite. It did provide some protection from drops, etc. but that was about it. I didn't like the bulk and rubber case as I carry in my front pocket and it made it hard to access.

The Armour series looks cool. I suspect it may have a similar rubber outer case. I haven't used one so I am only evaluating based on the videos I watched.

One thing to be careful about is HEAT. I live in Oklahoma and if I leave my phone in the car during the summer, there is a good chance I will get the "too hot to work" error. I have to hold up to the a/c until it cools down.

Just remember...iPhones are like a super computer that you can fit in your pocket. They offer a ton of cool stuff, but like most things in life, some of that comes with a sacrifice. A touch screen phone is not the most crush resistant and water proof device available.

Re: OK.....who has got iPads?

Thanks everybody! I guess this is another one of those things where one size don't fit all cases. I think the box I have will do for the most part and for those out in the wild trips I think I'll just leave that bulky belt loop part at home and just go the zip lock bag route to keep the water off. The Defender model does provide some protection from light rain and moisture but it wouldn't take long if it was dropped in a bucket of water to let enough water in to ruin the phone. The GPS and phone can still be used in a zip lock bag and may not be a perfect fix but will have to do for now.

Re: OK.....who has got iPads?

If you are an ATT customer you have 30 days to return the phone for a different phone. I would recommend you take it back and get the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active phone. It functions very much like an IPhone but it is waterproof and dust proof. They have not yet released the Otterbox case for it yet but it is on the near horizon and as soon as it is available I will be getting one for my S4 Active. There is also another brand new phone soon to be available called the NEC Terrain which is billed as being built to military grade toughness. It is also waterproof, dust proof and shock resistant. These phones will be much more to your liking and should protect you against yourself much better than any iPhone add on case. The iPhone is a nice phone but ruggedness is not one of its known traits.

Re: OK.....who has got iPads?

I'm at the two month mark for a Iphone5 and Lifeproof case.

+ like the waterproof ( even cleaning it is nice ) close the battery charge port and wipe it down )

+ I have the overpriced clip - which I like since you can lock the phone into it- and is shows a red and green indicator as to if it's locked-red / unlocked green )

+ I have noticed the screen isn't great to type on with the case. As some folks mention I believe the screen distorts the screen a bit. that said = as a phone and for apps I work great- with typing long e-mails - I would go with the newer verison where the case seals to the screen - and your on the actual Iphone glass. The only issue with this newer case for me- I sometime carry the phone in my pocket, and it's hard to take those bigger Otterbox style cases out of some clothes as the case want to pu

Lifeproof and Otterbox merged last month.

Otterbox defender series and then get the otterbox boxes to put it in when your going in through the really bad stuff. Bonus is with the boxes is some of them are so big that you can put other stuff in there that you don't want to get wet/crushed. I have had otterbox cases for 5 years now and have never had one let me down.

Their warranty is amazing to. Simply submit pics of what is wrong with name and date and they will ship out a brand new one for ya.

I was looking at those otterbox boxes yesterday and that may just be the answer to my problems. I think they have a lanyard and you could wear it around your neck and tuck it in your T shirt so it doesn't get hung up on thick branches, brush and also out of the way if you have to cross a deep creek. That's one of the bad things about GPS numbers they run in straight lines and who knows what will be in the way to get there.
