Old 18 Garage - Build Thread

I'm finally ready to start my build thread. I've been preparing for this for almost a year. First trying to buy a slice of my neighbor's lot, thinking we had that done, then he backed out, etc. etc.

To make a long story short, I'm building smaller than I want, but as big as I possibly can. I actually had to get a variance to build within the rear lot line setback. That got approved  so here I am, ready for the excavator to come next week.

This will be 26 wide x 28 deep detached garage, with 6/12 roof, using half attic trusses and half spread trusses. The area where the garage is going has roughly 4' of slope from the back to the front, with the slope continuing to the street where the driveway will be, but at less slope. So, there will be 4' of concrete all the way around, then 2x6 studs above that for a 10' ceiling. Eventually I will insulate and sheetrock but that will depend on how well I stay on budget. This will be for both auto restoration/shop, parking the wife's car, and of course storage for everything else.

Here are some before pics and my sketchup plans (no I don't have a '70 GTX, but hopefully that comes not long after the garage). I hope to have some progress pics next week when the ground starts moving. Pardon the mess in the pics - I ripped out some fence, sidewalk, etc that is going to get hauled away in the process.

Oh and the name - I've been working on old Mopars with my dad since I was 11. I grew up near Highway 18 in Iowa and he owned a building on what once was the highway but is now called Old 18 Rd. Fast forward 12 years, I live 3 hours away but am only blocks from what used to be Highway 18. Hence the name, Old 18 Garage. I even put together a logo for our shop, which you see on the wall in my sketchup plan.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my build. I'm excited to have a place to work on my stuff out of the elements!

Hey man I love the logo on your wall
It must be exciting to plan and start a new garage project.
I would suggest moving the compressor outside if at all possible.
are you planning to devide the garage with plastic when you start restoring a project to protect mama's car ?
good luck with the build

Yep, that's the plan. I figure that's the best way to do it so it may be put up and taken down whenever I want. During the bodywork process anyway. Moving the compressor outside isn't an option for me either, so I'll just have to deal with it. I've considered putting louvered walls around it at some point and running the intake into the attic, but that will be later on if I feel its necessary.

Thanks guys!

Hey there, nice to see another guy from Iowa. I'm down 150 in Independence. My dad also has mopars and I love being around them. Nice layout for your shop. X2 on the logo-nice.

Big day today. We broke ground. From front to back the elevation sloped roughly 40", so we went down 4' 5" at the rear. Tomorrow we'll set the forms for the footings and pour those either tomorrow or Friday. My 2 and 4 year old boys were loving the action. They had to join in with their machinery.

First I had the crew rip out the stumps left from removing a few trees we cut down.

Then the real fun began.

And the finished hole, ready for forms.

This morning we were able to form and pour the footings. I'm sure to most of you this isn't any big deal... We had a storm move through tonight after I stripped the footings and started dropping wall forms in the hole.

We hope to form the walls Saturday and pour those Tuesday.

And even though he'll never see it on here, thank God for my father in law. He's the one you see in a lot of the pics. He does construction for a living and is helping me out for only beer and gas. Although the way we drink beer sometimes it might be better if I paid him hourly! ;)

Thank you Joe!

Looks like you are doing it right. Having a pro on your side is a real plus. His beer and gas may exceed his hourly rate but you are still getting a bargain. Not to mention the man to man bonding.

We got 4" of rain Friday night. It put a damper on setting wall forms, which we had planned on doing Saturday morning.

As of Saturday morning:

And on Sunday:

Despite the muddy mess, we went ahead and set wall forms yesterday and will be pouring the walls tomorrow morning.

Tuesday we poured the walls and I stripped them yesterday. We also started dropping in the gravel before we pour the floor and laid tile around the base of the walls. The rest of the work has just been picking up the jobsite for the next round of work. We hope to pour the floor on Monday. Cross your fingers for good weather.

Very Nice, I like the brick pattern in the concrete walls.

I just built a 24x24 that is dug into the hillside, has block walls on two sides 5 foot up. very happy with the way it turned out. Haven't made any improvements to it yet.

Thanks, bugnout. I probably wouldn't have done the brick face if the house didn't have it, but we're trying to have the garage match the house as much as possible. The only think I'm concerned about is attaching things to it on the interior, but that shouldn't be any more of a problem than if it were smooth face concrete.

It has been awhile since my last update. We got slowed down for a week or two while my expecting wife was under the weather, but I"m going again now.

Since my last update, we poured the driveway/approach, and I formed and poured the sidewalk. Cuts are all made, so I'm happy to say that I'm done with concrete work.

I framed and placed the first two walls on Sunday and hope to frame and place the other two walls tonight.

I finished framing the walls last week. Yesterday we set trusses and sheathed the roof. This project started out with too much rain, but now we need some! The corn is getting pretty stressed around here. I can't remember ever having a heat wave like this. It is hard to get motivated to go out and work on the garage, but I hope to have the building dried in by Sunday night.

Nice progress Steve, looking forward to more progress and photos. But as you say the heat this year is something else. More like mid August than July.

Nice car! What year?

Thanks - It's actually one of Dad's that I'm "babysitting" for the summer. It is a '73 Dart *******. No show car, but fun to cruise in.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'm going to be getting much done over the next couple days. It is supposed to be 102-103 here tomorrow and Thursday, with heat indexes around 115... I know it isn't as bad as other places right now, but that's pretty hot for NE Iowa!

Great build and a very nice view from your home and garage. I know the heat has been an issue in many areas. We have yet to have a hot, much less a "warm" day in my area. I'm running the heat pump to get the house up to 66 degrees this morning. Would like to have some good heat for a few days this summer. We will see.

Congratulations on your project.

Ody.

I've made a bunch more progress since my last post. Roof is done, sheathing and wrap is done, overhead doors are in, soffit is 2/3 done, etc. It won't be long now! If only my budget had enough left over to insulate and sheetrock this year - not gonna happen!

Another month has passed and I haven't had a chance to update GJ. The garage is essentially "done" as far as construction goes. I just have to get the gutters installed, which I plan to do this weekend. The rest of the stuff to do before winter is landscaping and replacing my crappy old chain-link fence with dogear pine privacy fence.

Without further adieu... The (new) Old 18 Garage

I was given a bunch of kitchen cabinets that looked like this:

IMG_1149.jpg

And I'm turning them into this:

IMG_1150.jpg

My welding table/work table that I picked up at a school auction. I want to bolt it to the floor but am not sure of the best way to do it so that I can completely remove the fasteners if I need to someday. What would you do?

IMG_1151.jpg

Installed my compressor this week, too. Hose reel will suffice until I get the cash to insulate and sheetrock, then I plan on running a maxline system.

Thanks, guys. What kind of anchors would you use to bolt the welding table to the floor? On the compressor, I used the type that you drop in and they expand as you tighten the nut on the stuff. I could use those here too, but am wondering if there is anything that would work as well but be a little less permanent (obviously the hole drilled would remain, but if the entire fastener could be removed it would be good).
