Old 4h4836 vise

Hi Everyone, I have an old 4h4836 Western Auto vise I need help with. It belonged to my dad and I’m 79 so you can see it’s pretty old but I don’t want to get rid of it. But, some part wore out, dropped off or something because the back jaw doesn’t move when you turn the screw. You can turn the screw the push the jaw forward manually but that defeats the purpose. Does anyone have a diagram, picture or idea what part fell off, wore out or whatever. Something goes either in front of the jaw to cause it to move when the screws is turned but I don’t know what. Any help out there? Any suggestions?

I think what you're saying is that when you turn the handle counter clockwise, the movable jaw doesn't move, so the vise has to be opened manually? If so, you're missing the large "e-clip" where the screw exits the front jaw casting, conveniently noted by the arrow in the photo.

Thank you! That’s exactly right. Bet that part would be impossible to find. I hate to trash it because my dad bought it probably over 50 years ago and it’s still in good shape.

If you have a decent Ace Hardware, they may carry it. Mine has them in the area with loose screws and bolts. You just need to find the right size to fit your vise. Take the vise in with you if you don't have a good caliper.

Or just a shaft collar if it'll clear the pipe jaw. Last resort? Wrap some some wire in the slot where the e-clip would have gone, there's not much thrust involved in backing off the jaw.

Bearing shop will also have a clip.
