Old air compressor what is this?

Hi. I'm George and I bought this BIG old air compressor off craigs list for $135. It had a 5hp 3 phase motor and I don't have 3 phase so I bought a 5 hp motor of ebay. It sat for a year because I needed a mag starter for it. I got the starter yesterday and wired it up and plugged it in. Works great. I have only taken it up to sixty lb. I want to make sure the pressure shut off works. Can any one tell me what the thing is in picture 5. Its some type of adjustment. There is a tube running from it to the top of the compressor cylinders.

It's a single stage two cylinder compressor, the check valve is rated for 150 psi. That tube running up to the top of the cylinders is the unloader valve. It allows the compressor to start unloaded (no pressure in the cylinders). The adjustment is for setting pressure at which it will unload.

Looks like an old Quincy to me,, You cannot kill them. And if they die, they can be rebuilt to run like new....

What is the thing in picture 05? How does it work? There is a unloder on the pressure switch thats not hooked to anything. And I do not see where there is a place to attach more on the item in picture 05.
How would this work as a unloader? If this unloaded it would not get up to pressure to shut off or if its set higher than the shut off it would never function. Is it for safety in case the shut off did not work?

Picture #5 looks like an unloader used with a gas engine.

It is a older Quincey QR compressor but it does not have the usual unloader towers on the top of the cylinders. It does have a pressure feed oil pump system and (like OCG mentioned) should last forever if treated right.

Try sending a picture to a company that sells and maintains Quincy's and they should be able to help with anything you need. Where are you located?

I am not sure about the single stage compressor though, it might be a two stage.

It has oil pressure operated head unloader. When the pressure comes up, the unloader closes and it starts pumping. When the oil pressure falls off on shutdown, the unloader opens and vents off the head pressure. No need for a unloader on the pressure swtich if the oil pressure operated one is working.

Yea thats right it is pressure lube. I was getting it confused with champion where if you dont see an oil filter, its not a pl.

That is one seriously big compressor. You would do well to be sure your tank can handle the pressure that pump can dish out. In other words check for rust and hydro it to be safe.

FYI, if you google Quincy, and go to product manuals, they have all the manuals for free. You have to register and put it in the cart. Follow the process and don't worry it may look like you have to pay, but you do not.
