Thinking about bidding on this air compressor that ends today. All I have for a description is "Working Condition Isn't Known", and these 4 pics. Assuming the worst, how much of a project is rebuilding one of these?

Bid's currently at $22....worthwhile?

Looks like an old Quincy pump. Hard to tell scale from the pics but looks like it could be a 390. If so that size of machine is probably going to want a 10-15 HP motor to run it, which means three phase. Do you need a 15 hp three phase compressor? If not, I wouldn't even waste my time hauling the heavy pig off.

I don't "Need" half the stuff in the garage :p......but no, I just need to run air ratchets, die grinders & impact more than 30 sec. at a time. Most of my tools will **** down my current 17 gallon 1.5hp (cheapie from Northern) in less than a minute, and if I let run it'll overheat.

Yea the real cost would be the time/effort/fuel to haul it home.....I'll keep looking.

Thanks

Then buying that would be like buying a dump truck to haul home the occasional 2x4 from Home Depot :p

I'd keep looking for a 60-80 gallon single phase machine, the current requirements for a 5 HP motor are well within what's available for most residential applications. A two stage will provide enough air for anything you could generally need for most automotive service type stuff.

My point was really that if you're just looking for a compressor to run air tools in your garage, you will never be able to power that Quincy even if you got it all put together and operational.

Buy it, it's worth $22 in scrap value!

But you can use it to learn without making an expensive investment and if you don't like it, then you can sell it and get your $22 back.

Or do you plan to put $6.00 into it and "flip it" for $8,500?
This is a learning investment that could work for your hobby, even if the compressor has to be rebult, which is easier than a lawn mower.

Are you kidding:shocking: grab the thing, strip off the old pump, and use the tank, thats if its not rusted out and leaky, and pipe the output of your 17 gallon tank to this old tank...then take the air from the old tank...your 17 gallon tank won't work so hard plus if you want to spray paint later down the road the second take is an ideal way of removing excessive moisture in the sysem...heck I'll buy it if you don't I had been looking for a deal like this...were is it located? I'm in Chicago...

No way it's a 390 pump. It's much smaller than that, look at the belt that is on the intake pipe, a 390 pump has a 2" intake size. My guess is it's a 325 or maybe a 350 pump. I would get it for the price.

It looks like an old 350 to me. For the price, you can't beat it. It may be in working order as is.

CFM is CFM. Adding a bigger tank isn't going to make that pump put out more air. Just means it will run longer between cycles. A LOT longer. Probably well past the duty cycle ratings.
