Old Air Compressor

Hi,

As part of a term project modeling parts, my group and I were hoping to use this air compressor. Unfortunately, my Google-fu is failing me and I can not find any information on it. All I have is that it is a Farmair (compressor) made by K&G Manufacturing in MN. Any additional insight or information, especially on the number of parts it actually has, would be much appreciated!

I think that it's basically a tire inflator. What do you need to power? It would probably work for an airbrush. It doesn't appear to have a pressure switch.

We don't need it to actually work, as the project includes taking it apart and modeling the individual parts. I could not find anything online by myself for additional information, so thank you for a new starting point.

It’s a small single cylinder compressor. Cool looking but not too practical to use. It will be fun for your model project.

Other than bolts, it should have to following parts.

Flywheel
Crankcase
Crankshaft
Connecting rod (two pieces)
Cylinder
Cylinder rings (should be 3)
Cylinder head
Valve (likely a reed valve)

Take it apart and you will see.

Since the brand name is Farmair, I wonder if it may actually be a vacuum pump used with milkers out in the barn.

edit: I did find a couple references to Farmair online and they all called it a compressor so I may be wrong.

Once tractors had gone to rubber tires, nobody was going to want to hand pump those big things up, so the answer was what you see here.

K&G manufacturing is still in operation in Faribault - I drive past them every time I head East - but they do mostly CNC machining now. It doesn't hurt to contact them, although the odds of having an old parts breakdown or technical drawing of a product from their EARLY days is slim. Who knows - maybe they'll put in a little extra effort to encourage anyone to follow a career path in the tech and engineering fields.
As an aside, I think Stuart and I are both wondering how far from balmy Minnesota did you find this gem?

Actually, it is in Minnesota. It was found in an old barn on a farm a couple hours from the cities.

I found this air compressor in Darrouzett Texas in the barn but it has a gas motor. Did you get a hold of KNG manufactory? Do they have any information on what years they were built

The gas engine kind a looks like a Maytag but I can’t see anything serial numbers or model numbers. I’m fixing to see if I can get it running.

That engine looks like a 2 stroke, remember to mix oil in the gas.

K&G has been in business since 1937 and today operates as a high-precision aerospace machine shop. I’m happy to share anything useful if I’m able to track down more details regarding the compressors.
