Old Anvil - Collectible?

This popped up on CL this morning. Know / reputable maker?

VINTAGE AD ANVIL FRED.S.GICHNER
IRON WORKS (BELTSVILLE MD) 15TH ANNIVERSARY
1898-1913 IN GOOD COND FOR HOW OLD IT IS!!!
IT IS 4-1/2 LONG AND 1-15/16 TALL.

Sorry, that is all I have to contribute. I am just bitter due to the lack of realistically priced anvils in my area.

Best of luck, other then the pitting on the sides it looks like the striking surface and edges are in decent shape. You may want to try to get a few better pictures.

If those dimensions are right, it's just a model anvil, and probably not usable for anything other than a shelf.

Twertsy: I've got an aluminum one about that size that i may or might not ever hit anything on. I do like it sitting on my bench though. yours with the old casting might be worth the $45, but seems a little pricey for one that size.

What would you shaping/forming on a 4.5 inch anvil???? (if you really want to call it that) Going by your avatar, I take it you're not a jeweler.

Let me 'splain it to ya.........I asked if it's collectible, mentioned nothing of use. The poster you quoted "cursed those who collect and do not use...," and expressed frustration at the lack of reasonably prices anvils in his area. I agreed with his frustration, as we have the same anvil availability issue around here.

I can't imagine shaping / forming anything on a 4.5 inch anvil, hence my question about collectibity, not function

ALL: another reason anvils are so expensive to find a good old one is because good ones are rare that somebody will sell and not just collectors. too many users in the past 100+ years used them for cold steel and chipped their edges or broke a lot of them. also an anvil will probably not have its rebound if it's been in a fire and more than a few blacksmith shops and barns burnt down.

I understand what you're saying about anvils, but calling this an anvil is like calling a cap pistol a .44 magnum. I'm sure it's not what you're referring to.
