I have a anvil that is around a 125 years old. There is some lettering on it but I can't decipher it. I know it's a 170lb anvil

With good strong lighting, take pictures and post them here. Maybe somebody will recognize the shape and a few of the letters and be able to shed some light on your question,

It looks like Hay-Budden made in Brooklyn NY. There may be a serial number on the side of the base under the horn that can help you narrow down the manufacturing date.

Rub some white chalk into the letters to highlight them, give it a wipe, then post new photos of that on iforgeiron.com. Lots of knowledge there on anything anvil related.

Here are some photos of the anvil and the block it had been for the past 50 years. There is some bad spots on it.

36 years ago, I went to the auction at International Harvester Trucks in Vancouver, BC. I went specifically for the anvil. When the bidding on the anvil closed I was the winner at $225.
The other bidder was PO'd He wanted to fight. I put my daughter in my IH pickup and walked over to where the anvil was staked to a large stump. I grabbed the anvil and gave it several hard lifts against the large forged staples. The anvil came free and I carried it to my truck. The fight went out of the fool who risked a good beating.
My preschool daughter went with me. In a few seconds of my attention being diverted, she disappeared. The auction was stopped and the police were called. I called for her a few times. Suddenly the door on a very big safe opened and she stepped out. She posed and said "TA-DA". There was a round of applause.

A good anvil made the century old way has gone way up in value. I relate value to what an anvil will sell for. I bought my anvil for $225. In 2018. I was selling a post drill on Craigslist. The post drill was photobombed by my anvil. The first offer was for $400. The offers continued to go higher. I told the caller that I do not want to sell the anvil because my daughter has claimed it. The caller said she would not go higher than a $1K.
I have looked at a few new import anvils. I will not buy one. Check the internet for the accepted ways to check an anvil for problems.

I’ll pass
Better post it in the Garage Journal Classified section. All items there require an asking price.
I bet $700 would get some interested parties PMing you. You might have to accept a lower price depending on where you are located. Shipping would be a BIG problem. 😎
