I have a anvil that is around a 125 years old. There is some lettering on it but I can't decipher it. I know it's a 170lb anvil

Yep it is a 170 pound Hay-Budden. There should be serial number on the front of the base. If it is prefixed by an "A" it is post 1918; those with out the prefix were made between 1892 and 1918. If I had to guess I'd call it a post 1918 plateless anvil.
