Old B&D 7inch grinder/buffer ????

Hi I got an old Black and Decker grinder [type T] and it weighs almost 2,034 lbs ,well maybe not quite that much.........it runs but needs brushes [no biggie] and the wiring needs some tlc my question is the armature looks black and dirty what is the best way to clean the armature .......chemical ? abrasives? suggestions please......bobbycoke

If you're talking about the copper commutator bars on the armature (the ones that make contact with the brushes), what I usually do is just use a fine emery cloth and polish it out. I've turned them on a lathe before if they're really bad, but this almost always requires undercutting the insulation between the commutator bars. I usually have good luck with emery cloth.

Start fine and only go coarser if you have to. Try to get as smooth a finish as possible. There are also abrasive sticks that you can use through the brush holders without disassembling the motor, but I've never used them. Whatever you use, make sure that you blow every bit of grit off of the commutator before putting it back to work.
