When the frame was uncovered, I could observe that the condition really wasn’t so bad. I initially thought it was a write-off, but no. So I now have the option of keeping it as original as possible. It might be worth the effort.

New foundations, straighten up, reinforcing and replacing where needed. I have to think about this.

What a great find!
Do you know what vehicles may have been on the farm back in "the day"?
Good question. I’ve not been able to find detailed information about the early residents here yet. Some kind of vehicle was present, but no idea what kind. The barn gives no clues, there might have been able to park a small car in here, most likely not. And cars were not that common among ordinary people before WW2. A tractor is more likely.
If I find information, I will post.

Shame, the authorities blocking progress. So apparently you've started renovating the existing facility, while the application will rest top of some office desks.

That oil can ist a tremendous find.

Exxon-Mobile offers some information about their history.

Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company was divided into 33 companies by the US Supreme Court in 1911. Vacuum Oil was among these.

Gargoyle

As early as 1869, Vacuum Oil used a stylized red gargoyle to advertise petroleum-based lubricants for horse-drawn carriages and steam engines.

Since reading two names on the can, I would assume, it was manufactured after Norsk Vacuum Oil and Mobil Oil Norge fusioned in 1960. Also the state of slight corrosion would support this theory.

But anyway, not having gone too deep into this subject. So there will be far more to be dug out.

Thanks for the interesting information on the oil can. 1960++ sounds reasonable, regarding the condition. It was found near the edge of the floor, so it was possibly thrown under with some other metal trash at the time.
I found some newspaper pages from 1936 buried further under, so the floor is possibly from back then. Maybe changed or added later, I think the rest is from early 1900’s.

Some progress in the weekend. Removed the corrugated metal sheet roof.
Underneath was traces of an older tiled roof. Small fragments of red tiles. So I’m on the right track!

Oops, I spot a hole..
Well, the roof is coming down all together. A tiled roof is a lot heavier, and snow will stay up there in the winter in stead of sliding down. So it needs an upgrade to do the job.

Some pics from today. Frame and half the roof left. Next stage involves some digging. To what extent i’ll decide when all of existing foundations are uncovered. The frame is 50% ok, some members needs replacement. A reinforcement is also needed due to a heavier roof.
Theoretically it can be snow here in a couple of months. Hope the winter can please let me finish the ground work first.

Looke like some leveling will be needed on that corner post nearest the camera, LOL.

Some work was done on the barn this weekend. Indian summer was helpful. In the first picture also a glimpse of the brand new fence.

Removed the frame members on the roof that needs to be replaced. I now have the choice to dismantle the rest and make it easier to dig. Probably should.

Winter has not yet arrived, but now on serious overtime. By the end of this week the first snow will cover every ambition of progress in this project for the next 5 months.
So I was happy to see the ground well prepared this week. 70 cm of dirt removed, replaced with stone and gravel to a firm base.

Same here — winter is around the corner, and I’m already looking forward to spring so I can continue with the garage rebuild.

Good to see that you're able to get back on the barn project!
I noticed the vertical siding on the gable end of the barn seems to be boards longer than I'm used to seeing.
If you don't mind, could you tell me about the siding?
Thanks!

New milestone to be reached this weekend. Insulation, vapor barrier and rebar is finished. On friday the concrete will be poured. If all goes well, I can remove the formwork after a couple of days, then 3-4 weeks pause before the next step.

Thank You. The vertical siding on the gable end is not representable. When I dismantled part of the barn for the new section, I just moved the siding and made a preliminary gable end to close the building. I need to do the project in two stages for logistic reasons.
The boards are not in a good condition, and just fastened where they landed.

You can now see the outline of how this part of the barn will be. Soon it will reach over 3 meters ceiling height, large barndoor in the back and a smaller door to the house. I’m leaving a 4 meter opening inside towards the existing part. It will be closed off with sliding doors, so I can combine the space when needed.

One layer at a time. 4 down, 8 to go. The last ones will be slow..
IMG_2353.jpegIMG_2351.jpeg
I’m planning to use some of the old floorboards for doors. Massive and heavy materials that will look gorgeous. I think that will be a nice way to reclaim them. Not sure about the color, though, I need to see how the wood looks when cleaned up.
This is the layout as I’m following now. White part new, and red part restored.

The new part looks very narrow in the last photograph. It also doesn't reflect the drawings below. What are the dimensions of the new part?

The drawing is accurate. I think maybe the perspective in the picture is a bit deceiving.
The new section is 6,8 x 5m. Including the existing part the total will be 6,8 x 12,5m, 85m2 (914sq ft).
Stage 2 as originally planned, not shown in this drawing, adds an additional 4 meters length that makes it a total of about 112m2 (1207sq ft).

Even if it’s a bit boring just showing a wall growing in height.. Anyway, here’s an update of today’ status.
Almost 7 rows now, 5 to go.
IMG_2441.jpeg
IMG_2443.jpeg
Other news: Bought a larger concrete mixer yesterday. I’ve only used a handheld mixer so far, too slow and tiring. Also got a rolling scaffold to get me safely up to a decent working height for the last rows.
Trusses are ordered for last week of june. So that will be the deadline for finishing the walls. That should be no problem if nothing unexpected turns up.

And the windows will be perfect. The cast steel frame is i exellent condition, so the renovation will be easy. It was a 4 hour drive on friday to get them. Totally worth it.
