just moved down to Kentucky from Cincinnati about eight months ago. Our new house is closer to the country and we have much more room, including my upgrade from a small two car garage to my own 30x60 pole barn that already had concrete floors.
That being said the place was a wreck. Almost completely full of junk and wood, it had a room inside that i tore down, cabinets and workbenches home made everywhere.The aluminum siding was pretty beat, the insulation had birds living in it- and one snake- and the sliding entry doors were barely hanging on. A few posts were rotten at the bottom and required being shored up and braced/replaced and ALL of the horizontal wood that the siding is attached to - so four 8' 2x4's and one 8' 2x6 every eight feet down both sides and front and rear needed replaced. I gutted the building- had to rent a 20yrd dumpster and burned prob. three tons of wood in the back yard- the guy liked to build things i guess. Then i put everything from my garage in the back of this garage, built a wall in the middle, and ripped all the siding off the first 30' and replaced the wood. Under the old siding i found a steel wide walk in door front and rear of the building so i left those. Then i pulled the sliding doors and installed a 10' wide/ 9' tall insulated garage door -which required raising the header on the front of the building but that was rotted anyway so some mods and screws later and i had the front of the building built and added new steel siding on top of a layer of tyvec wrap. Then i moved the wall and put my stuff in the front and replaced everything in the rear 30'. After two months every night mostly alone i had the outside looking pretty nice.
I have since added some drain tile around the left side of the building since heavy rains would build up against the building and flood the floors and prob. is what rotted the old posts out. I had gravel run down from my exhisting gravel drive to the door and around the left side for trailer parking etc until i can afford concrete.
I pulled the old electrical panel- has its own meter- and had the power company pull the wires off the building while i rewired. I installed a new 100 amp panel and ran switches for my 4' t8 lights that i scored from a building being remodeled. One switch for front 40', and one switch for the rear which is walled off now as my body shop/paint booth -personal use only.
Recently upgraded compressors to a 3hp PUMA 60 gallon oil compressor, 230 ph1 and ran 70 feet of number 8 wire to the rear of the building and put it in the back corner in my supply room where the paint bench and supplies now live. Then i ran 3/4" sch40 pvc into the paint booth and also along the ceiling into the main shop and put fittings for my hoses on there- still need to install the water trap and some more drops for multiple hoses but works well! _yes i turn my air lines off at the ball valve every night.
The pole barn was now not insulated so i got several rolls of fiberglass barn insulation 6" from a buddy and have been slowly putting it between the beams and putting up osb board mounted to 2x4's but im not finished yet with that. The left side is what i would eventually like it all to look like. I used osb up to the ceiling and the lower 4' is leftover steel siding to the floor, then i trimmed the top with some 6-8'' barn wood that was in the garage when i moved in. Looks cool. Then i wanted some shelves for all my model/toy cars that have been in storage for years, so i utilized the triangular braces from the ceiling to the wall posts and built two large 8' model shelf "boxes"- then sprayed the inside black and lit them with single 4' lights and a separate switch. Almost done with these, need some lexan to cover the fronts but not bad....
Ive been slowly organizing car parts- my 64 mustang is on a rotisserie in pieces- and tools and work areas in the garage. I bought a full steel kitchen cabinet set from a house being rehabbed for $50 and it works great for all my oil/antifreeze etc...
The paint booth is currently just tyvec-d on the inside and i reused the old barn sliders to close off the room but some new doors with filters installed and a real fume vent at the rear will be in this summer. I also picked up 52 4x8 sheets of fiberglass reinforced wall board that i want to put in there so i can spray the walls down and brighten the room up for painting.
Finally- yesterday i installed my favorite toy, my 9000lb two post Atlas lift- from greg smith equipment in indianapolis-highly recommended. Now to modify my trusses to clear the roof of the car - i currently have a friend of a friend who is a structural engineer on trusses hopefully he can come up with a simple solution.
Lots to go but slowly turning this into something respectable on the cheap.
