Well, it's been about a week and progress is coming right along on the barn!

West side before .....

This was a week or so ago...

Taken this morning... cement truck? Had to repair about 8 feet of foundation on the east side.

This is the west wall tonight!

Next up... end walls!

Best pic I can find, the outside is fully done, the inside has completely solid floors and even a second floor on each side but you need a ladder to access them. Been to busy with the house to do much with it. If I could get a proper insulated floor on one of the sides I could put the wood shop out there but it gets too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer right now.

There's a decaying one near me that I'd love to own, think it could still be saved with a new roof for starters. :) Always had a soft spot for them, my Grandfather's barns were all painted white, don't know exactly why it wasn't red, but they were awesome places.

Although I have never inquired about it, I tried pitching it to the wife as a seasonal boat & antique car storage side business but I don't think she even processed the thought before "no" was uttered ;)

Thats one good thing, both my wife and I grew up around barns. We both had grandparents that farmed. So she's wanted to fix our barn since we bought the property in 1990. Great to have "spousal support"!! :D

Our barn shows it has been both red and white. We are going to use barn red steel for siding. Would have loved wood, but didnt want the maintenance issues. Here is a picture with the steel that was done by our contractor a few years ago on another farm.

I still like the look of the dimensional asphalt shingle... just hope for no more major winds!

I'm a couple of days behind on posting these. This is where they finished last Friday night.

South gable end sheeted and windows roughed in... forms pulled from foundation repair on east wall.

Picture of west wall and south gable..

Work will probably slow down this week. Temps in mid teens and 20-40mph winds predicted...

I hadn't seen this thread until this morning. I have a thread on an old barn that I converted to my shop and garage. It was built around 1870 or so I think. I've been concentrating on the internals this past year and this summer will tie up some of the exterior.

We are going to use the lower 2/3 back portion for general storage (boat, mowers, etc.) and maybe a small wood shop for stationary woodworking tools. The barn was an original milking barn with the cow stanchions. We will keep some of the stanchions in the lower 1/3 front portion. Plans are to finish this portion with the old barn boards that we removed from the exterior.

The hay mow is a clear span and will be used for "partying" . :D Plans are to keep the original ladder access, but also add a stairway. The mow will probably get decorated with some of my "rusty treasures" Ive been collecting over the years .. lol

The north wall will have a double french door in the center, with a 5'wide x 4' high sliding windows on either side of the door. Not the best picture, but this is inside looking toward the north wall..

This is an outside view of the north wall...

The french door will open onto a 9' x 16' deck we will add (approx where top of bucket truck is). Should be a great place to grab an evening beer and watch the grass grow!

THAT is one slamming shop Techie1961! Love the stone and the fact that you have it well lighted. Love it!
Thanks man! It is very bright in there.

I've been checking out your barn as well and it is going to be incredible. I'm not sure what our barn was for but I suspect chickens and possibly a utility barn as well. I have an old photo from when the house that we live in was built back in 1879 and you can see the barn in it. The part where my shop is is the original portion. When you dig around different areas, you can see the additions and change in construction.

For the outside, it's going to look pretty much as is. On the front left corner facing the shop, there is a beam that is rotted and sagging a bit so that is on the todo. The roof will also need replacing and I'll probably put a red steel roof on it. Fix up a few boards here and there as well as some of the mortar and that's about it.

Just1, why is there no snow there? I've been through Galena, Dubuque and Bellevue the last two weekends and they all have snow on the ground.
You have some sort of dome over your place or what? :headscrat
Regardless, the barn looks fantastic!
I'm just West of Rockford and will be puttin up some pics of my barns soon. Great thread.

Sounds like your about an hour north of us....

LOL... on the snow... just lucky I guess. In the past I would not have been happy about no snow. ( I plow and ride sleds) This year no snow has been nice ..allowing them to work on the barn. Sounds like our "luck" is going to run out on Sunday tho.

Would love to see pics of your barn.

More Red today!!! East side has steel!

Started framing gable end of the north wall... been waiting for "cooler" weather to get equipment on the yard. We got 5" of snow yesterday. The yard is frozen for a couple days. Supposed to get back in 40's by weekend. Lots to do before.

Built in early 1800's as a loyalist barn typical of our province, has been moved twice hundred miles or so along the river. Last move was 1950's to current location after the original barn burnt. Roof was converted to current style at that time to increase capacity. Fairly unusual is that its a clear span inside about 40 feet wide.

We are still removing loose hay that was stored in the barn before 1958 or so when they got their first baler. It was never removed as it was there for emergency feeding.

That's looking soooo nice Just1, I'm envious! Will you have to re-frame the entire north wall?
slowzuki, how was the barn moved the 100 miles? Floated on the river, or disassembled?
Can't imagine that would be possible or cost effective now.

Thanks for the compliment. Its been over 25 years since we moved here, so we have waited a long time. Still cant believe its our barn!

Yes, on the framing, they started re-framing the north gable today. They have it about half done with one of the sliding windows and the patio door installed. Too dark tonight to get pics. will try tomorrow.

Nice barns!

This is one on a family property; I believe the house and this barn were originally built by my great grandparents. It's no longer a working farmhouse property but there's still this crib and a newer barn used for storage.

They got quite a bit of work done today, considering the wind was blowing 35-45mph by mid day.

Got the house wrap on (looks like I was to the end of a lot of rolls lol ) , all but the 3 upper windows set, and all the aluminum soffit and facia on! Plans are for a 14" x 9" deck outside the patio door.

Was also able to get a pic of the barn front with no equipment in the way ...and the overhead door down.

The wind forced them to stop mid afternoon. With wind predictions of 50mph tomorrow, I'm guessing no work will get done.
Getting closer!

For kicks, here is what it looked like before..

Still doesnt seem real! :willy_nil

Finally time to resurrect the barn thread!

East wall a couple years ago..

The "Calvary" showed up Tuesday! .. (after years of "Fighting" the weather, one step forward, two back, I decided it was time to bite the bullet and pay to get it done).

Two and half days later!!

Started on the west wall today!

Can you say "Happy Camper"? :)

Still have to repair the storm damage on the north from last summer...

at least there is progress again!!!

.

Awesome progress! Feels real good to see it coming back together, don't it?

Work continued today. :)
She has come a long way in a few weeks.
pic of back wall a couple years ago....

Today, same wall...they started hanging steel on the back wall. Slow going every piece needs to be cut.

Got white corner trim on one front corner.

West wall almost done..

Hope to get steel done by end of week, but sounds like windy (again) Wed-thurs. :(
