I have made it a point to buy no new steel, sometimes i buy secondary steel from a recycling yard.

Bed Frames, Pallet Beams and old steel pipe are the basic materials of my creations.

For my contribution to this topic, see my post The Junk Trailer in this forum. Some years ago, but the trailer is still going strong.

Bed frame use to be so easy to come by, no longer! This is for the rear of my Roadtrek RV to mount my Honda EU2200 generator quiet box. I had to buy the larger angle and square tubing. I have a design change and need to redo the mounting area. For drilling I buy the double ended 1/8" cobalt drill bits in a 10 pack from Amazon and drill all pilot holes with them. I use cobalt for almost all drilling. Can't imagine not using cobalt. American made bed frames used to be made from scrapped railroad tracks. No idea what they use now. IMG_0001.JPG

I’ve tried to cut a section of RR track and failed miserably, but the bedframes cut much easier. Fixed up an old dogsled type sleigh to pull around with the snowmobile, and a few other brackets and things.

Whereas I didn't "build" with an old bed frame, I did drill some holes in one to install an underbed gun safe. Whatever Chineseium alloy was used was for the rails was very difficult to drill through.

If I have to do another similar project, I'll disassemble the frame and use a plasma cutter to make any needed holes.

I use bed frames for numerous projects. I get the frames and other steel at the local landfill in the metal recycling area. Free is always in my budget! When I need to drill the bed frames I start with an 1/8 inch cobalt pilot drill bit. Use plenty of cutting oil and slow rpm. When going up in hole size use a bit that is the size of the web of the the final drill size. When using a large drill bit slow the rpm. Use plenty of cutting oil and sharp drill bits.

one of my bed rail upcomming projects will be building an outdoor propane tank storage cage for the spare propane tank for the lift truck @ the volunteer warehouse. I've got my eyes open for wire mesh or expanded metal ( cheap ) for the project
