Hey guys, I have an old bench vise by reed. It’s a 424 1/2 . Any idea on how to find out the year or what it’s worth? I’ve researched online a little and I haven’t seen anything like it .

There are some Reed guys here who will answer your questions shortly. Until then, how wide are the jaws, and about how much does it weigh?

They’re around 4 inches I believe. It weighs a ton. Probably around 80 lbs or so .

In the north east, anywhere between $100 and $400 from what I’ve seen.

That's what they call a pattern maker's vise. The duckbill-type jaws indicate such. Plus the pivoting rear jaw. Very nice.

Here is another 424-1/2 Reed, including a catalog cut.

Excellent vise, uncommon model. I have a Reed 404 with the swivel jaw that I use regularly.

I just clicked on your picture and blew it up. That is a REALLY nice vise. It looks as if it has been taken care of all its life.

The vise you have is the swivel base version of this one.

In case it disappears the ad reads:
This is a fully restored vintage Reed swivel jaw coachmen’s bench vice in excellent working condition. It is a model 324 1/2 and is extremely rare and very heavy. The jaws measure about 4 1/2 inches across and the vise has a maximum opening distance of about 11 inches. I doubt you will ever see another one like it anywhere. This would make an ideal Christmas gift for the right person. I have two pins for the swivel jaw - one is made from brass and the other is steel. You can have your choice of which one you would like to have go with this vise. I am asking $500. Cash only. If you have any questions I can be reached at 585 - four five five - 0121. Thanks for looking.

-Don't want to interfere with your sale here but Prentiss made a similar, if non-swiveling, model #10 of very similar design. I picked mine up 2 years ago from a local. It's a nice design and it is rather uncommon but they're still out there. Photo below after cleaning/painting.
