Hey guys,

Any of you know who may have made this? It appears to be maybe 30s or 40s, I think its a breaker bar without the slide, ball detent works good.

The only marking I can find on it is "50"

I know being unmarked it may remain a mystery, just curious if anyone has a set of something this was in with makers name?

thanks!

Looks to me like a 3/4 drive snap on ratchet handle. I have one just about like it. Little pin holds it into the head of the ratchet mech so when the bolt gets loose enough I can pull handle out n speed ratchet. The 50 kinda looks user stamped to me. I'll try to get pics of mine and update when I get up and around this morning

Man, I used to stare at handles similar to that at estate sales and wonder what the heck they were. Maybe some type of jack handle. The button is very much like a Snap-On, but as Snapmom said, wrong size.

researched (ebay) and found that snap on did make 5/8 slide handle bars,
When? I was looking around inside some Snap-on catalogs at the collectingsnapon.com site for something else and checked out the bars out of curiosity. They made a 3/4-drive bar with a detent button (Loxocket) that took a detachable ratchet head, spinner head (that's their terminology for hinge handle or "breaker") or sliding offset head in the 30's and 40's, but it was not knurled on one end like that, and, as snapmom alluded to, it was not 5/8" diameter. It was 13/16". In the 50's they continued making that same bar for those same detachable units, but they also offered an additional bar that was knurled on the end for a better grip. It was also 13/16" in diameter. The 1-inch drive versions were 1-1/4" diameter.

Sorry for the slow response. On ebay there is a 1928 T bar slide breaker bar for sale and its advertised as 5/8". Maybe they measured wrong.

My hunch is that the seller is probably referring to the drive size of the drive stud on the sliding head, not the diameter of the bar. Snap-on made 5/8-inch square drive tools very early before standardizing only on 1/2-inch square drive.

If you mean this sale, linked here, the "5/8" in the title and description is referring, correctly, to the drive size, as I suspected.

The HD-5 sliding tee handle was 3/4" in diameter. Also, it was not knurled on one end. And made well before the detachable head era for heavy duty (larger drives size) tools.

When @snapmom said...
I don't think snap on made a 5/8 diam. bar.
...she was not referring to the drive size. She was referring to the diameter of the bar.

@Zrxrunner 's thought was a good one, but the diameter does not match the diameter of any of the bars like this that they made. See my post #9 again.

They did make bars with a 5/8" diameter. Namely for the early 1/2-inch drive sliding tee (S-10), but it had a groove in the middle, no knurling, no detent ball on one end, and it was not 18" OAL, and also the early 1/2-inch drive offset ("breaker") handles (No. 1), but no detent ball, the drive head was permanently press fit (early) or forged into a 90* angle (later), and they were not 18" OAL.

In short, that bar doesn't appear to be a Snap-on.

Thats what got me, I had no idea a 5/8 drive was ever made!!!!

And I remeasured, for sure mine is 5/8. Just another early brand I suppose.

Thanks for all the info, if nothing else, I always learn from you guys.

Thank you
