Hmmm...

I note the "Craftsman Hand Tools catalog from unknown year, circa 1960" from the bartlettstreet.com site is older than the "Craftsman Hand Tools 1960" catalogue available from roseantiquetools.com...

It would seem to fill a gap between the 1954 and 1960 catalogues at Rose's!

That's just it; they don't know. It's described as "circa 1960" but it has to be earlier than the catalogue from Rose's with the known date of 1960...

It is somewhere between 1955-59.

I updated the page to reflect your appraisal of the date range.
Thanks!
John

No problem, John; I didn't realize it was your own site!

Where did you come by the PDF? Did you scan your own print copy?

Either way, thanks greatly for making another piece of the puzzle available to us all!

From the perspective of the 1960 catalogue, here are some of my observations that lead me to think your catalogue is 1955-59:

Page 2:

Note this catalogue is for Zones 1 & 2, while the 1955-59Q catalogue is for Zone 3. Maybe this can account for different prices or offerings?

Page 3:

a) Note the new style of the roller cabinet. The 1955-59Q catalogue has the same style roller cabinet as the 1954 catalogue (though it has the "Crown" logo). See p. 51.

b) The "New" Speeder Ratchet is included in both these sets. The item didn't appear in the 1955-59Q catalogue. See p. 7.

c) This set has grown to 121-pc from 119-pc in the 1955-59Q catalogue.

Page 7:

Note the appearance of the "New" Speeder Ratchet that does not appear in the 1955-59Q catalogue.

Page 11:

Note the "Lug-Nut Magazine" is no longer described as "New" as it is in the 1955-59Q catalogue.

Page 13:

By 1964, the Stillson wrenches were Made in Japan.

Page 31:

"Karbo-Grits" no longer described as "new" as in the 1955-59Q catalogue.

Page 51:

The entire line of top boxes & roller cabinets has been updated from the 1955-59Q catalogue.

That's a 1959 caralog. The 1960 catalog has the micrometer on it. This was explained by Dave the Tool Man at the Craftsman Club

Well, Dave would be the guy who would know! Someday (when $ are less scarce) I'm going to treat myself to some of his CDs...

So does anyone know of any other PDFs kicking around for the Hand/Mechanics tools besides 1949, 1954, 1959, 1960 and 1964?

I was just looking at the Plomb catalog; I found it fascinating that they offered buying tools on time.... I wonder if they had tool trucks back then?

He's heading down the home stretch on putting all the Craftsman Tool catalogs on CD. I have to admire him for his dedication. He has spent hundreds of hours scanning his catalogs, not to mention the cost of buying them. Those old catalogs ain't cheap!

You're welcome!
I scanned my own copies and made PDFs in Acrobat Professional.
The print catalogs were expensive on fleabay, but I rationalized buying them with the idea of making good scans and sharing them with the group.
Cheers!

Well, that was very civic-minded of you!

For anyone else interested, the following are years for the Craftsman catalogue that I know exist, but for which public downloads are unknown:

1942 Mechanics Tools

1947 Mechanics Tools

1952 Mechanics Tools

1953 Mechanics Tools

1955 Mechanics Tools

1957 Tools

1966 Power & Hand Tools - Coming Soon!
1968 Power & Hand Tools - Coming Soon!
1969 Power & Hand Tools
1970 Power & Hand Tools - Coming Soon!
1972 Power & Hand Tools
1972/73 Power & Hand Tools - Coming Soon!
1974/75 Power & Hand Tools
1976/77 Power & Hand Tools - Coming Soon!
1978/79 Power & Hand Tools - Coming Soon!
1979/80 Tools - Coming Soon!
1981/82 Power & Hand Tools

The "Coming Soon!" refers to long-promised PDFs for the given years at Rose's site...

But that means we still need:

1942 Mechanics Tools
1947 Mechanics Tools
1952 Mechanics Tools
1953 Mechanics Tools
1955 Mechanics Tools
1957 Tools
1969 Power & Hand Tools
1972 Power & Hand Tools
1974/75 Power & Hand Tools
1981/82 Power & Hand Tools

There may very well be more earlier catalogues than these (and there certainly are later ones) but these are the ones of which I am aware...

Hi LG,
I just found this thread and I'm not familiar with the catalog activity.
I have a 1972/3 Power and Hand Tool cat.
Also 1974/75 and 1982/83 (not 1981/82 as requested)
Can I help?

Hi Gil,

I presume you have the print copies?

If so & you have a scanner & are prepared to put in some time converting them to PDF format, I'd say you would help a lot! I'm sure many here and elsewhere would greatly appreciate access to those catalogues...

If they are already in PDF format, I bet John above (jpilgrim) or Rose's would be willing to add the new finds to their respective sites...

And yes, the 1982/83 (and later) catalogues are needed too! I would personally start to lose interest by 1990, but others likely wouldn't...

Let us know & thanks for checking in!

Hi LG,
I'll follow up asap. I need to work out the procedure.
I was looking for possible info on my 50 year old radial arm saw. The motor is finally going out. Windings I think. Anyone out there ever replace the yoke mounted motor?
I haven't checked about getting it rewound yet.

Bump.

I just noticed that Rose's has added more Craftsman catalogues to their site.

The ones denoted in Green above are now available for download!
