Don’t be too discouraged by the $10 answers. If a person goes to lots of sales and flea market events, he or she can usually find weathered rusty old exposed screw vises in the 10-20 dollar range. But they are often gobbled up quickly so you have to be near the front of the line at opening bell.
Many people focus on the higher quality machinist style vises with heavier bodies, more robust jaws, and big slides that hide the screw.
Here is an example of a Columbian homeowner grade vise very much like yours that I decided to spend some time on. I have more than a few more valuable higher grade vises that need rehabbing but for some reason, I chose to work on this little guy.
