Old compressor, looking for info

Hey guys, I have an old compressor that I'm looking for info on.. Its an old PowerForce (made by ingersoll-rand) from 1985. It looks like a 60gal, horizontal tank, has a 5hp marathon electric motor. My dad bought it in 1985, and he says its a 2 stage, and thinks it will do like 18cfm at 100psi or something like that. The compressor motor is a straight stand up oiled type (not a vtwin) and it has what looks like an aftercooler between the air outlet and the tank inlet.

He used to use it for sandblasting and painting cars, so I know it has plenty of oomph, just curious what the actual specs are. It has no model number on it anywhere, just the powerforce logo, and the tag on the tank says it will hold 200psi. There are a couple pages from some sort of manual, but that doesnt really give any specs, just an exploded parts view of the compressor. It shows two cylinders, one large, one small, and they are on alternating crank journals, so to me that looks like its definately 2 stage.

I looked online, and I can't find any mention of PowerForce compressors other than a recall on a small portable one. From that recall, it looks like PowerForce was an offshoot of IR as were a bunch of other brands like charge air pro, mac tools, etc

actually, I can't really get a decent picture of it.. its buried in the back corner of my old garage, Its not hooked up, so its backwards against the wall. I did find a webpage with a recall on a small portable compressor that IR made (same list of brands), so I googled "Rand 4000", and found an auction for a vertical type that looks to have the same compressor / motor setup. It looks identical to this one:

I've been looking on the IR site for manuals, not much help. I'd find a IR compressor dealer close by and call them, see if they can ID and have them send/email a manual. Then shop online and see the best prices if you need parts. 930

I'd say 2 stage machine and you are about right, 18 cfm, give or take, @ 100 psi.

PowerForce is probably I/R's "cheapie" brand name. If the pump is aluminum, and not cast iron, that would be my guess. Hopefully it has cast iron sleeves.
If it runs well, use the hell out of it!

yeah, It was one of their cheaper brands, but do I know that thing was pretty damn nice.. He used it for years, and it had more than enough pressure to paint cars, sandblast, and do bodywork all day without cycling on and off a ton. I'm not worried that it won't be enough for what I need, actually, its overkill, but I was curious what exactly it was

Ok, I did get a few crappy pics.. its wedged into a corner against the wall, and the old garage is packed with junk, so I can't really get a decent shot of it. The compressor pump is identical to the black one that I posted above

yeah, that was the only thing I could find mentioning powerforce, but that was for 30gal portable single stage 3hp electric or 5hp gas models, so this one shouldnt have the issue

What do you want to know about it?? I have one on a 80 gal vertical tank. They are great machines and make more air than most current models. Of course they turn a bit faster than the newer stuff does too to make more air (about 1000rpm vs 800rpm). There is nothing wrong with the Al pump it has cast iron liners in it, cast crank with Timkin tapered bearings, rod bearing inserts, etc, and will run a long time. They sold tons of those pumps on other compressors, but they were the cheaper versions w/o the intercooler fins cast into the head and w/o the after cooler/fins, cheaper air cleaner etc.... It's not a Quincy QR-25 class machine but I would put it with the current IR stuff esp now that they use that cheep made in china pumps on them. BTW they were not cheap in 1986 when I purchased mine it was $1250.00 William....

W-Cummins: do you happen to have a manual or spec sheet for yours? I was curious what the specs were on the compressor since my dad couldn't remember, and looking online and not being able to find anything on them kinda made it more intriguing to me.

I'm assuming yours is a 5B50E60B

ACFM 19.1@100psi 18.9@175psi
Piston displacement CFM 22.1
bore/stroke 3.94"/2.17"
Amps 24
shipping wt 406lbs
pressure switch cut in/out 140/175 psi

BTW the head bolts are torqued to 35 lb ft and you should re-torque them as they might need it (mine did)

William....

Thanks for looking that up for me! looks like its on par with the newer compressors of its size performance wise. I checked IR's site, and those CFM ratings are inbetween their modern 5hp and 7.5hp models.

I've got the verticle model with what looks like the same pump.

Got mine off craig's list a couple of years ago. It is labeled as a Rand 4000.

I called IR to inquire about parts. They told me that the compressor pump is obsolete, and was actually made by someone else (I think they said DeVilbis).

All of the surplus parts were sold to a distributor in Bensenville Il, which, by luck is 25 miles from my house. The distributor still had oem valve plates, etc as of 2 years ago.

Here are the torque specs I don't have any rebuild information for the pump. Why do you think it needs rebuilt??

I picked up a Rand 4000 but it came in pieces....anyone know how to identify the pump? mine has a white sticker with a series of numbers on it and right below it shows a stamping
5EN 31539

Also mine looks to be like ^^^^^this persons compressor except mine says Rand 4000 with a 4-5 footed dark grey 80 gallon tank with a 5HP marathon single phase motor with the model being RA5T80V1

Thank you all in advance!

I have the single-stage 60-gallon version of the RAND 4000. I'm pretty sure that the pumps on both your and my compressors were made by an Italian firm, and marketed in this country as ABAC/IMC. Check this website to see if any of the pictures or diagrams look familiar:
