Old compressor, new tank

The tank on my 2HP Campbell Hausfeld compressor is on its last leg. Would there be any down side to using a larger tank as a replacement? It seems to me that a larger tank would make the compressor run a longer time to to catch up and maybe overheat.
Thanks.

OTOH, the ballast will last longer before the pump has to run again. However, I do think there's a happy medium. You should be good as long as you're not trying to fill a 100 gal tank with a little CH compressor.

Then again, the cost of a tank could be a factor. If you find a dead compressor with a good tank, you could combine parts. Not something I'd do because the plumbing could be a hassle.

BTW, how do you know your tank is "on it's last leg?"

If your air compressor tank is rusting out, then good idea to take it out of service.

Let's see pics of what you've got !! ;)

Go price a new air compressor first, lot cheaper to than fix with this option.I was at an auction,I seen one go for too much money and it was a cheap model.I don't remember the brand.

Mine rusted out. I priced a tank and a rebuilt pump. And it was cheaper to buy a whole new compressor. Ck my other threads on that mess.

Check your Home Depot Black Friday ad!! This Friday, the "leaked" ad scan saw online had a brand new porter cable 6gal for $99, get there early!! Also Lowes has the same price. Sears has the 3 gal oil lubed for $80. Good time to pick up a small portable compressor.

Well, firstly, I love my old compressor. It is a real 2hp 2 cylinder cast iron CH compressor perfect for my needs so I am loath to junk it. Secondly the tank has a small rust spot on the bottom 'corner' so I expect it to go out with a whimper rather than a bang. Finally, I'll be looking at CL for a newer compressor and tank with a burnt up compressor, something like a Lowes, HD or HF high speed unit in the 20-30 gallon range. I'll cut the mounting plate off old faithful and attach to the new tank. Plumbing the old to new is just pipe. No big deal. Thanks for the help.

A lot of the Kobalt/Husky/Speedaire etc. compressors (depending on age) are just CH rebrands. You may find that your pump and motor swap right over and bolt to the existing mounting plate. I can't imagine that they have changed basic mounting of the pump and motor much over the years.
