I have a big old compressor that has an issue when it is cold out. I believe the unloader is oil pressure operated and comes out of the side of the crankcase, when its cold out air leaks out of it. It take a good 20 + minutes for it to stop.

is there an adjustment? Or is the cold oil causing it? the oil level is fine.

Would a synthetic like Amsoil compressor oil help or not?

I believe it in an old Wayne. I don't know if leaks is the best description, its like the unloader stays open until "X" happens, i don't no if X is the unloader out of adjustment, the compressor oil is too cold, or something else

That compressor has a centrifugal unloader. More than likely the mechanism has gotten a bit gummed up over the years. It would be a good idea to disassemble the unloader end of the pump and free up the mechanisms. It would not be a difficult job, the only concern would be the availability of any gaskets and the ease of making new ones if necessary.
