Old Craftsman/Atlas(?) Drill Press

Well I had a line on a 150 that fell through. This one is listed for $130. Seems steep, he said he'd take $100.

Will I be disappointed with a 1/3hp motor for metal?

That looks like one of the lower end drill presses. Fine for smaller holes in metal, but the larger 15” version is a better drill press for metal - especially with the third pulley.

oddly, Craftsman did have a third pulley that would fit the smaller vertical tube like on this one. I have one somewhere in the garage.

Why do you say this won't be as good as the 15" for metal?

Looks to me like it matches most closely with this picture from @11b30b4 's post (https://www.garagejournal.com/forum...ftsman-drill-press-information-thread.484456/).

Most notably it looks like the power switch matches with this picture as opposed to the 103.2388 which had it on the side of the casting.

The heavier duty ones had the 4 knob handles, yours just has the straight shaft handle, which was generally on the cheaper ones. In some years and sizes these were Companion branded, in 1938 they were Craftsman branded.

Still a fine drill press, but if I was shopping for metal I'd wait till a 3 pulley one showed up. I would also still buy that one for $130 all day long because I'm a hoarder

Thanks for the info. I understand that the three pulley is better for metal, but I also know I can get a kit for that. I wasn't sure if there was something else about this press that wasn't great for it.

So $130 is reasonable?

I'd rather have that Craftsman than some generic Chinesium DP that will burn the motor up in a year and have junky spindle bearings...
I just drilled 4 holes 3/4" deep 5/16" diameter, in mild steel today with my 150 Craftsman that has a 1/3 HP motor with no issues...

That was going to be my max. This guy ghosted me (probably sold it), and I ended up picking up a 1973 Delta Rockwell 15-017.

A Craftsman 150 floor model with a 220 v motor went on marketplace yesterday for $100. I saw it this morning and took me till noon to convince myself that I needed a second one. Contacted the lady and drove about 75 minutes to get it. She believes her dad bought it new as her mom worked at Sears and she always remembers it at their house. As a benefit it had a foot switch not shown in the pictures. It is in better condition than my other 150, which is also in very good original condition. Now I can have one for my woodworking and one for my metal work. Also have a 3rd 150, and a few 100’s I will be restoring and selling down the road.
