An old box that belonged to my father had been sitting out in a shed for about nineteen years since his passing. I discovered it a while back and thought maybe I could bring it back to a life of usefullness. It was in bad shape.

View media item 4851I finally found the date stamp. It's hard to see in the photo but it reads Made in USA. 6/69.

LT2771,

Your Father would be very proud to know that you spent all that time restoring that beat up aszz box!

Look how it turned out . . . Just one word for that type of finishing work . . .

OUTSTANDING . . .

Thanks guys. It was a good bit of work but I enjoyed it.

Can you explain what you did with respect to the latches? :headscrat In one photo it looks like you simply left the old latches on and simply primered the entire box.

Then, later it appears that you actually took them off and re-riveted them back on along with the logo's.

Insight there my good man, insight . . .

You can actually still get the hardware from Sears. Pretty standard stuff really. Initially I was going to leave the old latches on but changed my mind later on.

That is an awesome job. My brother has my old man's craftsman box sitting in his shed rusting away. He'll never give it up (for free) but if it ever happens, I hope I can get similar results. Great job.

I have the same thing with a Wizzard sticker. There were some envelopes in the bottom and the oldest was dated 1968. I have also seen the same box branded Dayton and Waterloo, in addition to Craftsman.

What is the story on the handle and latches. You were able to get new ones from Sears? The Craftsman plate looks like pop rivets. Is that what you used on the handle and latches?

After removing the rust from the box I was able to make out the model # (65334) on the lid under the handle. SPD showed a different box but the latches are pretty much standard fare on every box like this.
I ground off the old rivets and attached the new latches with SS machine screws.

View media item 4862On the lid I ground the screws down flush with the nut so they would clear when it was closed.

The date stamp on this box was on the top shelf front left corner.

Thanks everybody. I guess I probably have 3-4 hrs. in the project. I just did a little here and there when I had time. Spent a lot of time waiting for paint to dry.
Someone asked about the paint earlier. I used the rusto hammered gray.
