First let me start by saying hello. I have been lurking here since last summer.
I've been following some members in their restoring old wood working machines. Yesterday I found a CL add for a drill press and one thing lead to another and well it followed me home.
After some research, I belive it is a late 30's- early 40's craftsman. the number on the base plate tag is 101.03622. Is this really a rebadaged Atlas?
Anyway I started the tear down to night and have ran in to not being able to remove the spindel from the quil. I have removed the set screw and a the pin at the bottom of the quill. Does the spindel get pressed out? If so, how can I do it without a press?
I've tried to attach more pics of the quill but system won't let me up load.
thanks im advance. Will post more when possible.

Yes, that is about the right era for that DP, and confirmed that it's built by Atlas for Sears under the Craftsman trademark. (Model #s beginning in 101 are Atlas)

I think you are trying to get the quill out of the housing? (The quill is the part that goes up and down, the spindle is the part that spins...)

You meed to get the gear crank out of the housing before the quill will come out.

thanks for the reply. I have the crank out of the housing. Pics wouldn't load.
The pic loaded this time.
How do you get the spindle out of the quill. I don't want to go beating on it with a hammer if that's not how to seperate them.

There should be a collar at the top that is held in place with a set screw. If you remove that, you should be able to separate them (might take some persuasion, depending on if its stuck). Be gentle, use a 2x4 and lightly tap that, rather than marring up the spindle itself (the top, not the bottom!). If you remove the collar you should be able to remove the spindle by pushing it down through the quill.

Hope that makes sense!
