I am a former employee of Sears. Was cleaning out my attic and found this. Anybody have insight on this ratchet? Looks to be a 1/2” it also looks to be in decent condition with a little rust. Ratchet does not seem to work although I’m sure it can be fixed

One of the amber handled rats. Not sure on the age but it is a sought after collectible.

Someone who knows the letter codes can give you the manufacturer and age.

It is a New Britian made for Craftsman shortly after their intro series commonly referred to as the C Series. This ratchet is special as it is part of special run that I can't remember the name but Golden Jubilee is coming to mine. The BE series ran from early 30s into the 40s. I think yours is somewhere in the middle of that range.

Thank you all for the replies and assistance. I am glad I posted this as I was actually just considering tossing it. If I recall I think that’s how I came
Across it when I worked for sears. A customer exchanged it for a new one and our manager said just toss it as it was too old to be fixed. If anybody has an interest in it let me know. I may just go ahead and put it on eBay.

Howdy Brian,

Craftsman ratchets are my thing.

First, I'd be careful when referring these as a part of the "C-Series" of ratchets, as the ******** collectors typically reserve that name for the earliest Craftsman ratchets: CF-87, C-97, C-98.

Your ratchet falls into the nexus of what some call the BE & Circle H "Boxhead" style ratchet family. This is one of the most complicated families of Craftsman ratchets that existed. The family was first introduced, not in its entirety, in 1935 and ended in 1948.

The specific ratchet you have was a part of a special collection within the Craftsman brand. Uniquely, this special collection wasn't even depicted directly within the Sears Catalog, but it was a part of a Craftsman Mechanics Brochure. The "amber handle" ratchets, in their various forms, were first available in 1939.

Your ratchet was first depicted in the 1941 brochure for the brand. The only way you could obtain the ratchet through buying for $26.50 the "48 Piece De Luxe Socket Set" and/or for $95.00 called the "Master De Luxe 125 Piece Socket Wrench Set". The same sets were offered a year later for $33.50 and $115.00 respectively.

After that, the "amber handle" variants were believed to have been discontinued after 1942 due to WW2 rationing.

I've done an analysis on the plastic handle, but I don't have the information in front of me. I remember it wasn't butyl acetate but a variant.

These pieces are HIGHLY sought after. Finding examples in even decent condition are difficult to find. There are two ratchets within this family that are NEVER discussed, which I will take the initiative to do so when I release the corresponding video about these ratchets.
Just to clarify. I was referring to the BE being post C Series not calling it C Series. I see that I could have explained that clearer. Thanks for clarifying the de luxe not Golden Jubilee. What was the Golden Jubilee sets for?

Yeah, that guy on eBay is dreaming more than quite a bit. The pieces are in great condition, but the price is way over the going rate, even for eBay

ARG!!!! I believe that seller is a gent I picked a couple years ago (in my Twertsy's Flea Finds Thread) and got a Herbrand stack and a bunch of other tools. He had a complete set of the amber handles from his dad, in Waynesboro, PA! I didn't make him an offer 'cuz he seemed sentimental about them being his pop's prized set.

At least he is no "LegendaryPaduano", "MyFineCraftsmanFinds", and now the new alias "twistersuniquecraftsmanfinds8339" on eBay. That guy was bamboozling people for years.

Seems like he has turned over a new leaf though...

I would like to thank everybody for the assistance with this item. Unfortunately I can't post the link because I don't have 5 posts, but you can private message me for the link or I am sure that you can find it. There is no reserve on the item and a starting bid of 1 cent so if you are interest go for it. Thank you again!

More information on this series! Bringing an old thread back. FB_IMG_1698327781762.jpg
What year is the add? The first post may just need a little cleaning and oil. But the tooling does look unbreakable other than dirt in the ratchet. My eyes have never come close to seeing that model. I like it.
