Old Delta/AR Williams Drill Press Needs New Motor

Hi all,

I picked up an old old Delta drill press a couple years ago, now I really need a working press as I have a few metal fabrication projects going on. The old Bosch rechargeable wont hack it anymore.

The press was really crusty, all the gears and mechanisms were gummed up. I took it mostly apart and cleaned it up, its working pretty well now, except the motor is dead. Even if it worked the old electrics are :shocking:

The throat is labelled "A.R. Williams Toronto, Canada" and has an old Delta cover on it. The motor was a 115v 1Phase Frame 36 (!?!?!?!?!?!) 1/2 horse Leland made in Guelph about 15 minutes from my house.

The chuck runs true, which is awesome considering the condition.

Now here is where I need some help please;

The old is labelled "36 Frame" which doesn't correspond to any NEMA spec I can find.

The shaft is 3/4" keyed and staked with an allen bolt.

The "D" dimension from NEMA drawings is 4 1/8".

I cannot find a NEMA chart that lists a 36 frame.

I would like to keep the base-to-shaft-center and the shaft diameter the same, as I would like to reuse the pulley and the belts I have. If I have to I could turn the pulley out to 7/8" or 1" on a lathe. If I have to have a larger base-to-shaft-center (NEMA D specification) I will have to experiment with more belts.

I would love a recommendation for a replacement motor. I value a solid, reliable tool and something that belongs on a vintage tool is a plus. I have other Baldor motors and have had great luck with them on the compressor and lifts.

NEMA frame tables I have found show the only 3/4 shaft frames are 66, 203 and 204. The latter 2 are discontinued and I cant find any suitable 66 sizes from Baldor or anyone else I know of.

I am thinking 1/2 hp up to 1 hp. RPM is 1725. Reversible, with an "onboard" starter if necessary. I have a 240v welding outlet available if necessary.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I found a Baldor model L3565M that uses the 3/4" shaft and a 3.5" base-to-center, 1 phase 1725 RPM but the cheapest price I see is $~500, and they don't ship to Canada.

Any suggestions pls?

I would say the AR Williams name plate is a distributor tag. Also based on serial number the press is from 1941. I would take a look at the catalogs at http://vintagemachinery.org/Login.aspx?url=http://vintagemachinery.org/home.aspx to determine what the recommended motor might be. As long as you are changing the motor I would also suggest a 3 phase motor and a vfd for the infinite variability it offers.

While one may appreciate the desire to keep it original, same belts, same pulley, life's about tradeoffs.

I'd settle for most any ball-bearing repulsion-induction or capacitor start 1/2hp 1725 RPM I could find and most will bolt right on.

Adapters to put a 3/4"-bore pulley on a 5/8" or 1/2" shaft are readily available. V-belts are cheap and a new, notched belt is a good idea in any case.

Thanks Rick, yes Vintage Machinery has great stuff, including reference to the Leland motor.

So it certainly isn't vintage, but I did pick up a 1.5hp 1750 motor with a 5/8 shaft, but I found a buching to adapt the smaller shaft to my priginal pulley so I am onmy way to reviving the drill now.

The motor is listed as reversible, so I also picked up a reversing switch. Neither the motor wiring diagram nor the switch diagram is clear to me, even though they are the same manufacturer. Is anyone please able t translate these two diagrams into one that will work?

On the top is the switch, in the middle printed on the big page is the motor diagram, and on the little paper at the bottom is the diagram that came with the switch.

Thanks for the help
John

Well after a lot of searching and experimentation I got the motor wired up right. The diagram that comes with the switch us dangerously useless. There is a V4 available for download from Princess Auto but that diagram is ALSO WRONG!. They need a version 5.

I was able to fit the reversing switch inside the original housing with a bit of cutting and filing. It looks neat and tidy now.

Here is a corrected diagram for those it might help.
Sorry its upside down. It shows right-side-up on my computer but always flipped by the Forum.
