I have a 20v DeWalt drill and impact set, perhaps 15 years old, came with the black batteries. Recently bought some new batteries, the yellow ones. The batteries slot in, and the tools operate, but I get a strong ozone smell from them when I do. Is this normal?

Silly question but you’re sure the old tool is 20v and not 12v I assume. Either that or dust/crud in the motor of the old tool maybe…

I've fired up a few old tools, including 120v, from those that have sat unused a long time. A few have stopped after a few minutes of running.

My old Dewalt drill makes that smell with the original battery. Noticed it about a year ago, I’ve been meaning to take it apart and see if it needs brushes or something, but so far I haven’t.lol

It's not the batteries causing it. 20v is 20v
My old brushed power tools occasionally emit a burnt smell upon initial startup. Brushes are a maintenance part and this smell can be expected. IIRC Dewalt continued making brushed power tools along with brushless using the same 20V batteries but this may have stopped.I have a 20v DeWalt drill and impact set, perhaps 15 years old, came with the black batteries. My brushed drills have a small smell when I first put a fresh battery on them. They also feel more torquey and stop more abruptly. After a few minutes of use, they go back to their normal selves... Unless I throw the 9aH battery on one. Then they run like that for a while.

My ten or twelve year old Bosch drill started smelling after I used it to mix a couple of batches of tile grout. I put it on light duty for a few years, and used it sparingly. Eventually the smell dissipated, so I gradually increased use of it. It’s good enough now that it’s in the regular rotation, ie if it’s handy, I grab it for whatever I’m working on.
I probably should look at the brushes, though.
