I saw this old die stock in a lot of tools for sale in McMinnville, Oregon, a nearby city. It is interesting in that the company name and city are cast into the guide that centers the work in the die. It reads "Goldsmith and Lowenberg Portland ORE."

I found a reference to Goldsmith and Lowenberg from the Portland Oregonian newspaper. It was dated 10/29/1882, and mentioned them as "agents" for a company making iron stoves. From this I assume that they were a general hardware/dry goods operation, and the die stock guide was a form of advertising, rather than a maker's name.

Kind of interesting, and somewhat local.

Dredging up an old thread. This is a wonderful find. I believe this would have been actually made in Portland.....Cast by Goldsmith and Loewenberg's in house shop, or one of the local Portland or other Oregon town Cupola furnace operations... They did make, and were agents for all sorts of cast pieces over the span of a few decades. They did also import some wares from the east via ship from San Fransisco and perhaps later rail car. Though I find no historical record of that(rail) in my searches. Cast metal wares with their name would almost surely have been made in house, local at least. The screws and the raw brass would be the imported parts. Goldsmith and Lowenberg puts it in the late 1860's to 1890's

Did you end up getting it? If not do you remeber where it was? A shop?
