Old drill press : Is it worth it? Thoughts?

This 20-ish year old (not sure 20 is old enough to justify posting in vintage HAHA) Jet drill press is for sale listed at $250. Was told it works great and was just overhauled and well cared for but I am not familiar with that brand and don't want to get ripped off.

Thoughts please?

Thanks!

Looks like craftsman’s. Ended up buying one then parting it out because the run out was bad. Also didn’t like how thin the belt was. Personally 250 is really steep for that drill press.

No. Jet never made drill presses for Sears Craftsman.

I agree this appears to be Craftsman DP but I don't think it's 20 years old. I think it's 80s vintage - likely the last of the made in USA drill presses Sears used to sell. I bought one new in 97 and aside from the difference in style, it was made in China.

This one looks really rough. It hasn't been overhauled - it was painted (WHY?!?), nor was it well taken care of. It was ridden hard and put away wet. The seller is either a shyster, or hasn't a clue what they're talking about. I wouldn't pay $50 for that DP.

If you're in need of a DP right away, keep looking on CL, OfferUp, FB Marketplace, etc. If you're anywhere near a large city, drill presses will be readily available for much less money.

Good luck!

Brian

I agree it's a painted craftsman.
In that condition it is not worth much even for parts.

There is better out there. I found an early eighties HF #38142 for $40. It needed a motor and pulley, which I had. Pretty happy with it.

When I'm in the market for a DP, I look for the low speed center pulley (220 RPM) and a table elevator.
