Old Dunlap 1/3 HP motor rebuild

I have this old motor that came with a craftsman bandsaw I purchased early this year.

I ran it when I first got the saw but then cut off the old power wire and it just sat. I just picked up a nice belt sander with motor problems and thought I could just use this motor on it for now. I was just going to put a new power cord on it, but noticed the motor was caked with saw dust. So I took it apart.

I got it all clean and everything seems good on the inside

Now the problem. I have it back together and it runs. Sometimes it sparks when I power it up. What's wrong with it? I don't know if it sparked like this before.

The only thing that might spark is the centrifugal switch on the starter winding. If the motor is starting and no longer sparks while running I wouldn't worry about it. But if it bothers you, or you're seeing puffs of smoke, a solution would be to clean the contacts with a file (a "points file" is ideal) followed by a few passes of very fine sandpaper (I use crocus cloth)

BTW, that's a rather small motor for a belt sander. Have fun!

I cleaned the contacts and still get a spark sometimes on startup. But it runs great and is perfect for what I want to do. Cleaned up this vise anvil with no sweat. And the metal dust just falls off. I like the speed and will toss on a 3/4 HP motor in the future.

Did you install new brushes ? It could be bits of carbon breaking off while the new brushes are wearing in.

This motor doesn't have brushes.
