Hey Fellas. I’m about to open up this old grinder but I came across my 1st issue. I’m new at these machines so if it’s cool, I’d like to ask a question or 50.... I’ve only got my 103.23100 under my belt. Ok back to the grinder.
I took both wheels off and I’m stuck now. How do I get these things off??
I don’t know what they’re called. Not the shroud but the hubcap look’n things on the shaft.

Turn on the grinder and smooth out the shaft with high grit sandpaper. They will come off once it is completely smooth.

Ok 40 mins with the sandpaper. 1st with 220 then 150. Should I keep going down to 80???
Ok do you think I can use a puller?? I’m not sure if that hub will break though

When you're sanding something, anything, be it wood, plastic or metal, always start with the coarsest grit you're planning to use (the lower numbers) and work to the finest grit (the larger numbers). Otherwise you're trying to push a rope. Yes, those items will break with a gear puller. You've got some kind of flaw in the shaft that's holding them on. Polish the shafts with big number sand paper, spray some PB Blaster on the connection, let it sit a spell then they should come right off.

Puller makes sense to me. Once you break it free from the corrosion I would think it would come off. Is it keyed on in anyway or just stuck?

Oh I thought high grit was fine and low would be corse. I didn’t want to take off to much material all at once. Ok I’ll try the 80 just for a second or 2.

It feels like there’s a set screw holding it on but I’ve looked everywhere and there isn’t. No key either. Let me try sanding again. I’ll be back.
Thanx Fellas.

Yikes! No--you don't want to wear down the shaft. Have you tried penetrating oil? A sharp rotation with a strap wrench? Those shouldn't be putting up that much of a fight.

Thanx Fellas.

The part of the shaft you can reach with sandpaper is obviously no longer the issue. You're just wearing down your shaft which will cause wheel fitment problems later on. Concentrate your efforts on the area where the shaft and the wheel flange touch--i.e. with penetrating oil for starters. Jeez, I hope you don't have to change the bearings!

Ok the flange is spinning freely now but there’s something holding it to the shaft.
I have blasters soaking in now.
It feels like a socket on a wrench. Is there a button that’ll retract a ball or something to release the flange???
I’m not going to mess with Her anymore until I get some answers. I need answers.....
I need the truth.... oh damn, I got a little to pumped up there.

Ok I’ve been out back for 3 hours now and can’t seem to figure it out.
If anyone has one of these or knows what to do please help me out.
I’m going to call it a night before I break something.
Thanx for your help Fellas.
We will accomplish this mission

If the flange is made of aluminum or zinc, try heating it up with a hair dryer or heat gun. Do not use a flame! Once it is too hot to touch, you should be able to pry (gently) to pop it off.

I have the craftsman version which uses the same type of flanges. I gave up but others have succeeded. I know FrankLee just did his recently.

I think a little heat is a good idea just go easy on it.

There has to be a trick for this one.
Thank you all for try’n.
I’ll move on to this cool GE I picked up the other day. Looks old.
I need a disc sander. Not sure if She has enough juice though

Yes it is old, 1930's and from when parts of CA were 50 Hz supply.

It will run faster on 60 Hz but may not have the power to pull the skin off a rice pudding.

How is the wiring wired? I just came across one and I have to wire the power supply to the motor wires. The motor wire (red & yellow) are twisted together and there is a solo black wire. Where do I connect my power supply (black and white) and which wires go to the switch?
