Old electric hacksaw

This torture device is for sale in Craigslist. It got me thinking, is there anything this can do that a bandsaw can't?

No. Not really. That's why they've been replaced by bandsaws over time. But if it's cheap enough and all you have is a hand powered hacksaw it's a good upgrade. I own a larger power hacksaw and use it regularly. Bandsaws are faster but I'm never in a rush.

I've watched these saws cut through rebar like a hot knife through butter.

The entertainment value is high with those.
They are fun to watch and usually work well.

It can wear out a blade in one spot MUCH faster than a bandsaw

Like Dozerhand says, you can set it going and leave it, and go do something else while it cuts away.

I have that model. Mounted the motor underneath in a boxed base. Takes up much less room than a bandsaw. And as Al mentioned, it is entertaining, almost comforting to have the voopaa, voopaa in the background while doing other things.

That looks almost identical to one that Facilities has where I work. The "unattended" part is correct; I had one of the maintenance technicians call me one evening and ask me to check it, he thought he had left it on. He was right. It surprised me that no one had added a kill switch that would shut it off once the cut was completed.

I have a metal band saw and this ancient Marvel Hacksaw. It was originally driven by overhead belt and pulleys, but it was later converted to an electric motor. Its not as efficient as a modern band saw, but it works just fine, cuts straight as an arrow and is a ball to watch in action. Not much value for use in a production shop. But its fine for my home shop.
