Sorry for non-garage topic, but could use the group’s help…

My father in law passed away last year and I’m trying to help my mother in law with some home maintenance issues.

Would like to get some opinions on what’s causing some marks/paint flaking on some interior paneling. Will try to post pictures….

Trying to determine if there might be a pest problem or just material getting old.

Thanks for any help!

Background info:
-Home is ~1971 ranch house construction; brick exterior….Has been well maintained
-Location is coastal area of South Carolina
-Spot in question is in interior room on west side of house

Looks like a pest problem to me.

Does it wipe off?

Is the material spongy, flakey or hollow?

There is some kind of residue on the surface that can be scraped down but the paint is gone underneath.

Upon closer inspection, it does look like some kind of bore holes in the spots in question.

There are some soft spots in the immediate area.

Updated photo attached

Thanks again all-
