Retrieved this from an old central heating fan blower, ca 1970's 80's. Would simply like to know if I can wire it up to a plug and plug it in. Not bothered about speed settings or temperature. Thanks
Sorry, Yes I am in the UK. I am a complete novice at anything electrical, which wire would go where giving the highest chance of functionality and the lowest chance of death?
I can see brown, white, blue and yellow with an obvious earth.
Sorry to be so thick but the four wires can be paired with two to each prong (ie live & neutral and the single green to the third prong at the top (earth) ?
Unbelievably I trained at college as an electrician nearly half a century ago. You probably can't tell but I didn't continue with my studies :-(
Looks like a multi speed shaded pole motor. The ground/earth lead is easy. The others are more difficult to determine. One wire is a common lead and goes to one side of the power line. The others are individually connected to the other side of the line for different speeds. If you connect line voltage to the wrong wires the motor will be damaged. If you connect multiple wires together and to power the motor will be damaged. You really need the wiring diagram for the unit it came out of. Might be able to measure the resistance between wires and figure it out but that's a last resort. I would guess the voltage taps would have lower resistance between them than between any of them and the common line.
A basic understanding of electrical circuits and the relation of resistance to current flow is often beyond many persons.
The high degree of communication required to communicate the concepts is often beyond the capabilities of texting between strangers.
I was exposed to Electrical Theory during intensive training in a classroom with a trained experienced instructor to guide my learning.
Maybe a short get together with a pad of paper and some refreshments would be a place to start.
I would say it looks like a multi speed motor, speed is control by taps in the winding.
If I am that desperate to figure out probably easier to map out your winding resistances from the motor...
It's 16 entries but you really just need to measure 12x and map the resistances between the wires out and figure out which wire is which speed.
The one with max ohm is probably the highest speed one.
Sorry dunno too much about color coding especially British electrical color codes.
