I would love to own an old firehouse. Talk about an awesome garage.

I have one I'll sell you but I don't think the city would be happy. :spit:

Thanks! The commute would be a bit far...

They come up from time to time...but only cops and criminals are allowed to carry guns here, and the neighborhoods theyre usually in, I wouldn't want to be the only person without a gun.

In my town they turned an old firehouse into a pizzeria. It has cool stuff inside.

Yep usually a very cool building in a not so cool neighborhood..... Had a chance to buy one in Cincy a long time ago, the neighborhood is 10X worse now than it was then and its why I didn't pursue it at that time. whew dodged a bullet on that one..... Actually its about 5 miles further into the city than the one being restored by a member here. Hes in a much, much better neighborhood though.

They make cool houses. When I was doing my conversion of an 1885 carriage house in center city Philadelphia -- the guy at the end of the street was doing a similar aged one bay firehouse. The combination of size and available off street parking is unusual in most cities.

They don't build 'em like they used to. My city built a brand new fire station a few years ago to replace one of the three we have. It's one of those fancy modern designs that looks like an office building. The firefighters hate it because it feels too industrial and sterile inside. They prefer the downtown firehouse because it's old and more cozy.

Are there pictures in that article? Maybe something just isn't displaying properly for me, but I keep clicking through it hoping to see pics of the restored station but see nothing...

Yep - check some of the later pages. For some reason the Photobucket links earlier in the thread don't work.

You know what's pretty crazy, I've driven past that exact firehouse many times and thought I would love to buy it... my dad was with me one day and said the exact same thing... Guess we weren't the only ones. That's a hell of a building, I can't say I ever looked at it as an eyesore... I always was kind of fond of it the way it was.

Here's how it looks now:

Anderson Cooper lives in a restored fire house in Greenwich Village, I read about it in an article a few years ago. He did his best to keep it as it was.

This is where I want my next assignment to be. Although, I'm not sure the ladder truck will fit.

Raleigh has a one-bay station that is now in private hands:

I worked for a fire alarm and sound company one summer that was located in an old fire station. They quickly outgrew the building and moved to a much newer and larger facility. Last I heard, the old building was still for sale, but it's a lousy neighborhood.

I see it is listed under contract. PLEASE tell us that you pulled the trigger and are planningg a bedroom in the top of that hose tower! Keeping the fire pole in case you need a quick get away or in case a tribe of strippers happens to come over...

I cannot believe how cheap that building and its taxes are. I really, really live in the wrong place!!

One thing that is unique to all firehouses is the smell, diesel exhaust and dinner. I have worked in a few older firehouses. City of Pleasanton CA maintenance crew restored a very nice old Wolf stove/oven with a firetruck theme, powder coated all practical parts in red and black added diamond plate, very clever and well done. I spent 16 years in the firehouse that has the worlds oldest still burning light bulb, over 110 years now(Livermore CA Sta.#1).It was common in the 60-70's for Cities to have developers build firehouses in big planned neighborhoods and put them where they would be useful.Often hard to tell them from the neighborhood except the oversize garage/apparatus floor.Original fire houses from the early 1900's have a special place in my heart.
