Well, little bit about me. Just turned 24. Have been tinkering in my dads garage since i was 16. Bought my first house Jan 2011 and been fixing it up since.

old mans garage, attached double car 17 X 17

my new garage, 15 X 21

We decided to fix up the garage rather then tear it down and build a new one.
It needed new shingles, once we pealed off the old ones we decided to re sheet the whole roof

There was no windows in the garage, so i said hey dad lets put some skylights in while we do the roof. He said okay :) found some used ones on kijiji

Re: My old small garage meets 2011

Next was the useless garage door...... we put a larger one in

Garage stayed like this for a while..... we capped the wood.

While using the garage, i found that in the warmer weather it was very stuffy at the back of the garage ...... so i asked my dad if we could put a window in, another kijiji find .... used window

As you can see there was a ridiculous amount of junk in the garage. My dad left me a lot of stuff when he moved south so ...... i needed shed

I asked my dad to build me a nice shed, he said nope, he was too busy, soooo there was a place down the st that made nice sheds... he sells his demos every fall for a reduced price so i put a deposit down at one

8 X 10 full steel door

IMG00508-20110530-2053.jpg

he sells them as-is off the lot... you have to move them yourself

Re: My old small garage meets 2011

So winter is almost here.... i am planing on fully refinishing the inside of the garage in the spring / summer. I would also like to run a natural gas line out the garage in the summer and hook up a heater

I had a chance to put up my shop lights the other week

IMG01096-20111204-1745.jpg

I have a propane heater so i can do a bit of tinkering this winter

leave your comments :)

Nice start on the shop. Seems like there is always one more thing to be done. But I guess that's part of the fun.

Andy I have a freind who has almost the same garage . When he moved in it looked just like yours over the years it has gone through several stages of improvements . He has built a few really nice " LARGE " cars in that old garage a 1974 cougar and a 1973 ranchero to name a few . He has goten it fully insulated and drywalled now and actually heats it with a pair of electric oil filed radiant heaters and cools it with a small window unit . He has made it his own and is in it more than he is in his house .

Nice work, especially the door(s) and skylights. How many cars do you have!? I see the old Passat, the Jetta wagon, and the little Cabrio, not to mention the Grand Am!

Rick

ya rick the idea with this garage is the flowing... car, motorcycle, tool box and beer fridge ....

no junk in the garage will give me more then enough room and i was even thinking of one of those $150 window a/c units as well

the grand am was the previous owner of the house car... that picture was taken when we did the home inspection

the "old passat" is really a 1992 jetta its my big project car, you can see the build here

the jetta wagon is my daylee car right now, and the cabrio is the girlfriends car

Re: My old small garage meets 2011

Keep up the good work. My first garage was 18 x 32 and leaned on the neighbors garage. My dad and I lifted it and put a new foundation and sill plate, lowered it and pulled it over as straight as possible. I then straightened the front by putting a false front. Front the street it looked like a new building from the small space to the neighbors side not so nice. Nobody ever saw it.

I was young and aggressive like you keep at it. Nice work!!

yes the one wall has shifted a bit some time in the last 50 years ... we figure the garage should stand for another 50 years

Looks worlds better! I've never seen skylights in a garage before, but i like the idea! I also like the window AC cutout.

You've made excellent progress, good work.

One question though, why does the front room of your house have two doors at different levels? Is the one on the left a basement door or something?

Re: My old small garage meets 2011

Some good work going on there. Isn't it going to make the space a fair bit smaller though?

When me and my dad were framing the walls we were very careful to only cut into the garage as little as possible

I lost about 4" in width and 4" in length

I Measured the garage and its still 15 ft by 21 ft

The door on the left ... side door ... puts you on a landing which then you can walk up a few stairs to up stairs ... or walk down a few stairs to the basement.

There is a few houses on my street with the same design the two doors and most my neighbors never use the front door ... always the side door

Re: My old small garage meets 2011

i like it,good work, ive seen people tearing down buildings to build again, thats so wrong

Thanks .. its something we briefly considered... but it would have been much more costly .. I would have wanted bigger garage and needed permits. So we decided to sink some money into what we have

Very nice job. I stared out with a 1-1/2 car tin shed with a dirt floor in my first house back in the mid 70's. Your work will pay off in resale when you move on. Cheers, Mike

I am so impressed with what you have done with this older garage. You've created a very nice workspace for your projects!

Nice work! Funny I remember reading your Mk2 thread when you first started! It's been a long time. Not a VW owner anymore
