Old General Utility Knife

Got an older General 855 utility knife made in the US. Picked up locally, felt awesome in my hand and love their stuff.

Did not have any blades and now having troubles finding replacement blades for it. Looked on ebay or anywhere else except one for 26$. Utterly ridiculous since I spent $1 on the knife.

Any ideas?

How are those any different than any other three-notch utility blades I can buy at any hardware store?

The picture on Amazon looks close to a regular utility blade, but the General shows 3 notches, Stanley and others only have 2.

Yes I know I found those. Thats way too much for blades. I will just go buy a stanley if thats a the case.

From what I gathered thess blades have a bit shorter width.

Ah, shorter width. Could be.
As for way too much, I'd say that $26 is not unheard of for a USA production blade. It's not unreasonable for a premium imported blade either. Bi-metal gets that sort of price, and some of the specialty coated ones (carbide, TiN), get even more.

I just read a review on Amazon and one reviewer said the blades are standard size but other brand blades do not line up with the tabs on the slide that go into the notches in the blade. This is 4 or 5 buck knife. I would not be locked into proprietary General blades when every other blade interchanges. If possible I might try knocking off all but one tab on the slide to make it more universal.

Why mess with a knife that takes odd blades? You can buy a new Stanley utility knife with the superior angled head and quick change blade feature for less than $10. :lol_hitti

If we're talking new, I really like the Lenox. Not USA made but the handle is nice and fat.

Old utility knives! Love 'em. I picked up one exactly like the one below at the scrap metal yard. I got this and some other things for a few dollars.

This is not my photo, but another GJ member's photo:
