Very interesting I would have never guessed stump anvil, seeing how the man worked in the mason field, I would have guessed it was for some kind of mason work.

I miss read the stamping and thought it was a gusset awl. Probably what the estate guy thought.

It's a nice find.. Get a small disk of stumpwood and get it on your bench.. I'd imagine it to be far handier than you'd think..

It's a strange thing but I didn't know what a stump anvil was until a few days ago when I was google-ing something else and spotted one..

My father who's taken up blacksmithing says it's for fabrication. It fits into a metal grid that can accommodate different tools for sheet metal work or other fabrication work.

It's a stump anvil.
Portable.
Generally used in the field to sharpen scythe blades.

I was doubtful of your answer, why would an anvil be necessary to sharpen a scythe blade? I looked it up and found this,
