Old grease drum

I’m going to pick up an old marathon grease barrel 120Lbs. The barrel is smooth
and has no ribs. I’ve never noticed a grease drum with no ribs. I’m planning to use
it for a trash can. Any idea on vintage? It’s the newer M logo so I’m guessing newer
than 1961.

Looks like it should shine up nice. My fear is it’s cardboard but I don’t think so.

As you've noticed you have a grease pump on that barrel - the barrel has no ribs so that the follower disc for the grease pump can slide down as the grease level goes down.

The follower on that grease pump will not go all the way to the bottom if used in a modern, plastic pail. The new followers are quite expensive, too!

Some air grease pumps had large housings that the pail sat inside. It allowed for a better seal to keep contaminants out of the grease, and a more secure mounting.
