Hi everyone,

I have a very old grinder/buffer. The buffer goes on a tapered threaded bolt. No nut is in place so the buffer always comes off. What kind of nut do I need?

Thanks in advance

There is no 'nut'. The buffing wheel just "screws" onto the tapered arbor and is held by nothing more than friction and inertia. (Though obviously you need wheels with reinforced center holes.)

If your wheels keep coming off, it's possible you're turning it the wrong way. If the arbor has a normal right-hand thread, you need to set the motor up so buffing pressure wants to screw the wheel further onto the shaft- not "unscrew" it off the shaft.

And if that isn't the problem, you might swap the tapered arbor for a straight-shaft arbor that does use a nut and washers.

Doc.

Great news thank you. I screwed on the three buffer wheels and did some testing. They seem to stay on.

Another question: I have two oil/grease ports. Tapered at the bottom. Should I add grease or something else?

No such thing as oil/grease ports. Are they oil cups or grease *******?

I would assume oil cups. If so I would use a good quality 10 or 30w non detergent oil. Use lightly as it may seep out of the seals.

How fast is the arbor spinning?

Thank you.

Oil cups. The arbor spins fast. The unit is at least 35 years old, could be 70. The belt consists of small three inch pieces "riveted together.

Would Quaker state motor oil be a correct choice?

Thank you.

Would Quaker state motor oil be a correct choice?

No. Not if you require a detergent free oil. (usually looks clear)

Motor oil is detergent based oil.

You need compressor non-detergent oil.
Sears sell non-detergent with the power tools and with the power washers.

I keep it around for my pneumatic brad nailers and staplers.

Can we get a picture of this contraption? How fast is fast? Not trying to be a smarta$$, a legit question. Just wonder what motor you have this hooked up to, 1725 or 3450 RPM?

As jjjrmx5 said, most "motor oil" is detergent. I buy 30 and 10w non detergent oils, they look like just like motor oil quart bottles, but state non detergent on the front.
