Old HF grinder stand any good?

I am thinking of keeping this though space is limited

since they don't sell It as heavy duty anymore.
The base is a heavier cast than what they have now.. Or the sheet metal bolt together deal

Just need to keep this outside unfortunately and mount the grinder when I need.
any idea what to use to paint it with? I am thinking tractor paint.

Also bonus question: why is the vise shown only have 3 ears? Seems odd and I didn't see any breakage.. Which way do you mount it since it's not symmetrical.

I'm not sure how to answer this, but the three ears thing is how they are done--one on each side and one to the rear. Stress is better spread that way.

Implement paint is okay, but as always with painting, surface prep and a good primer is most important.

Hint: If you buy one of these stands remove the top plate and fill the column with concrete. The extra weight/mass makes these more stable.

Primer coat, whoa . I remember when they used or prime things. I think Reagan was in office. Where have you been? Since the 80's it's been newer faster and better ,(somebody que the flying pigs [emoji200]) ,with those one coat paint processes . I don't think of all the HF goodies I have bought since 1980 that one thing was ever primed. Not to dump exclusively on Chinese stuff either, I saw a few John Deere implements that were the same way. This the way of the modern world.[emoji80]

And sitting outside the paint won't last six months.

Nope but you can knock it off quick with a 4.5" grinder and stainless wire wheel in real short order then paint it with something decent. Heck you might even prime It first [emoji87]and while you are at it add some decent welds wherever they are needed. Note, the weld comment is on HF metal items in general not the grinder stand itself. I've never seen one Just that most HF structural stuff is pretty lightly built and the weld quality is often pretty sketchy.

I have to check the top too but I think all the black parts are casted so no welds.
It's not the greatest stand ever made but I was looking on their stands now they are much lighter quality even than this one. So I think I will scruf it like you said and roll some more paint
It is unlikely it will rust to the ground in my lifetime

I have the same one buy it's got a Craftsman (or maybe sears) label on it.
I wouldn't wager my life on the thing, but I'm pretty sure it's up to the task of keeping a bench grinder off of the floor.

Mine holds the wire wheel .

It walks across the floor pretty good when in use.

Should probably put some rubber feet on it someday....

It's probably worth whatever they charged 20 years ago when I bought it.

Even with a HF you're still ahead of me. Mines sitting on a work bench, good nuff
