I came across this Jigsaw in my fathers garage. He said that the "smoke left" last time he plugged it in.
Seeing as how I occasionally need a jigsaw and usually borrow a nice Bosch from my work, would it be worth fixing this for light use.

Looks like it's missing the base plate?

Depends on what's wrong with it. Parts are probably not available and if they are they are probably expensive so if it's anything major you will be better off to just buy new. Jigsaws have come a long way in the last 50 years also. The new ones have all kinds of neat features that will make using a newer one nicer.

See if you can take it apart and figure out what is wrong and go from there.

Base plate and some blades are there, along with the manual, and a square guide. I'll open it up and see if I can tell what's burned up.
As for parts, there is an address in the manual and instructions on how to order parts. They require a minimum of $1 plus 10% for shipping. I'm certain they are still in business and fully stocked, ready to service their 50+yr old tools (yes, I'm joking here).

What Bob said, but the learning experience of taking one apart as almost always worthwhile, and who knows, it could be something simple.. :dunno:

+1 on how the new ones have features that make cutting much easier. I use the variable speed a lot on my bosch.

But I also like the coolness factor of your all metal saw.

Usually when I need a jigsaw, it's for some precision cut I need to make. While I can appreciate the cool factor, most old ones lack variable speed control and vibrate like hell. I gave up my old working craftsman about 10 years ago at a tag sale for 5 bucks.

Personally, I wouldn't waste any time with it.

Merry Christmas.

Always makes a project to try and get running/usable again. I enjoy fooling with old stuff like this, a great learning experience, and as posted, there may not be much wrong with it. Sometimes that does happen.

Newer jig saws are better, but I'd do like the others said and take it apart. Always fun and you'll learn something. I just sold an old B&D at a yard sale for $3. Guy has one just like it and needed parts.

Actually, we probably could use a "power tools parts thread" like the Vise thread that was started. post what you need and what you got...
