I like to restore knives in my free time. Plus I get to teach my younger cousin something (seems to enjoy it himself).

Anyway I would like some old kitchen knives to restore. If anyone has some or knows where I can get some, please let me know. May even look at fixed blade knives.

I'm in south Arkansas if that helps.

Double, I would like to see your process for restoring kitchen knives, I have picked up a few high carbon steel knives and dont really know how to refinish them.

You want a project? I've got a box full of 100-year-NOS large butcher knives. They were made by a Spokane blacksmith. They're in mostly very good condition. There's also a dozen or so steak knife blades needing handled.

Wow, Aaron! Great work. I'd considered doing something similar, but never had the time nor the talent. Glad they went to a good home.

Sent you a PM about the remainder.

Do you use anything special on the bois d arc handle ? I find that the when first cut the wood has a very nice color but the moment air hits it the color gets very dark.

I love tung oil as it brings out a very rich color in any wood. I buff all of my handles with carnauba wax

By cutting it do you mean out of a fresh log or something dry.

Here is another handle showing the normal color of bios d arc and tung oil.

A good friend of mine used to make knives from old worn out files. He made some really nice handles too. He spent a lot of hours working on them and he sold them for peanuts. He didn't do it to make money, he did it because he enjoyed doing it.

I had an uncle that worked for railroad in Norfolk Va and made kitchen knives out of broken/dull power hacksaw blades. Great steel and holds edge great. Later blades were bi-metal and of course those would not work at all. Blades were like 16 inches by 1-1 1/4 wide. To hard to drill so he used the end hole for a rivet and then a copper/brass ring on the front of the handle to secure it.

Nice knives doublearon98.

Here's one my my son made from an old file when he was practising to be a blacksmith, and a 'firesteel' for making sparks with a flint. Old file steel is very hard but rusts easily..

Thank you. Wish I had forge, looks good for a first try. Files make great knives. Get the rust off then a light coat of 3n1 will keep rust away.
