Old Lincoln welder/generator

I have had an old Lincoln ac-150 welder for years and never got around to seeing if it would run. Last week I started on the project and got it going. It runs great after sitting for 10 years but I cannot get it to weld and the generator will not work, no ac power. I checked to see if the brushes were making contact and they look great. It has been kept in a dry building. I got it after someone owed me some money and they paid me with this. Of course I was told it would work but never bothered to check it out. Any tips on what I need to look for? It will now crank the 1st time I pull it and runs and idles great. I would like to use it but no good like it is. Thanks for any help on this. Tom

This. It's been sitting long enough that it's lost its residual magnetism and won't pick up. A booster pack should do it. Just flash across the generator output terminals.

It probably has a DC exciter, a small DC generator built in to excite the alternator field. This was how it was done before brushless alternators. I own a military genset that uses this system.

Tell me how do I flash it? I remember doing this to a car or truck generator years ago but I cannot remember how I did it? I believe we called it polarize ? I think I used a 14 gauge wire and touched one end to ? using a 12 volt battery

Use an old 9 volt battery connector with the ends of the wires stripped and a good 9 volt battery wrapped in a heavy rag. Run the welder and put a wire from the 9 volt in each side of the 110 volt outlet. It should bog down. As soon as it does, quickly remove the wires from the outlet. An older fellow who runs the local generator/starter rebuild shop showed me how to do this. It has worked every time for me.

I found a broke wire going back to the engine. It is now welding and got ac power. Thanks. Tom
