like most other introductions posts, I've been a lurker for several years and used some threads on here to update my first home garage. first garage was a typical two-car garage that was in very basic shape when I bought the home. as a matter of fact, it had two completely unusable work bench areas, that I quickly removed.
I'm by no means a mechanic, but I do like to tinker and spend time detailing, so I setup my garage to reflect those hobbies and even inadvertently copied some member's paint schemes!
how it started:
how it ended (close enough to what it looked when we sold the house in November):
now, we're in our new house and I get to plan and redo all the fun garage work, plus plan for a detached garage. we moved into a 1960's era split level house that we really like, and while it's a bigger home than our previous home, it has far less storage space. I'll be 35 in March and have about 30 years worth of significant Lego collecting that is taking up too much space in the basement, along with a car addiction, so I've convinced the wife "lets skip building a shed and just build a garage with additional storage!" she's semi-onboard, so I'm researching plans and layouts here to best utilize our property and get an understanding of price.
she bought a new car in early 2021 and is loving parking it in the garage, so that's likely not going to change (especially if we have kids). I have a new car on order as well, so I'd like to get all three cars under a roof before next winter. my plan is to update the attached garage with paint and lighting, remove the grey wall and open up the front space, and that garage will essentially be my wife's and storage for the mower, snowblower, etc.
for a detached garage, we have no HOA or property limitations per the deed or city, so we are exploring adding second floor space to the garage. I did a SketchUp mock up of a 30x30 garage to protect for a dream 1980's ski boat, but I don't think we can afford that size of a garage. realistically, I think we'd be ok with a 24x24 garage with loft for storage and roughed in living space or office space (kind of like a carriage house). in the end, the detached garage needs to fit my Golf R32 and my new car, as well as have space for my detailing supplies, a work bench, toolbox, and storage space above with potential for a home office. as much as I want a two-post or four-post lift, this will not be a forever home, so that will have to happen at the next place.
attached garage (disregard clutter from moving!):

so TL;DR with current 2022 materials and planning for a 24x24 garage, what am I looking at budget-wise? I plan to reach out to some contractors for quotes, but want to get a basic idea now to help plan and temper expectations.
