Old mechanical Bonali hacksaw resto.

Today I get this for free.

It was sitting outside on a scrap pile of a customer's shop. I asked him why he was throwing it away as it still looks pretty good. He answered that it still works but he doesn't have any use of it and if I wanted, I can have it. :rocker:

One of the first thing I did was to clean it.

As it was pretty heavy, I prefered use some good ol' hydraulic muscle to unload it of the trailer.

Then, I blow everything and start to clean and lube everything before hooking it up. It's a 380v triphase motor.

And while I was working on it, I get a visitor.

I don't know where he came from, he doesn't have any collar or ID. But he is very friendly! I caress him, make him stand sit, play a bit with him as it was my own dog. He then sit outside, waiting and looking at me, following me everywhere in the yard. Pretty strange.

If he came back in the next few days and stay with me like that, I will ask the Police if no one said the loss of a dog. As he doesn't have any ID, tatoo or collar, I'm afraid he's been abandoned. People often take a dog without knowing the responsibilities involved. A such big dog eats a lot, needs some grooming and vet care. They are so nice when puppies and movies like Beethoven make them look like the perfect family dog. They actually are big beast with all the inconveniences.

Then, today, I'll try the saw. I let the hydraulic oil draining overnight to be sure not to have water in before starting it. The plug is not the same as in my shop, I'll have to change it. I also have to check the compatibility with the electric supplies I have and how the motor is wired. (In Belgium, we have 220V single phase for domestic use and 220V and 380V triphase for workshops and larger electrical consumers.)

It's running and it works well! I had to fight with the hydraulic as it was stuck and didn't wanted to move. I disassembled the cylinder from the saw, clean the rust with wool steel to prevent any damages on the seal and lightly hammered the cylinder with a wood mallet to free it up.
I also had to change the plug. The old one was for 220v 3 phrases + ground. I needed a 380v plug 3 phases + ground. (Some applications also need a neutral line, a total of 5 wires.)
This is how the wires looked when I disassembled the old plug. Not good ...

After. Much more safer.

The new plug. a bit overkill but at least it safe.

They are no identification plates, so I don't know which year it is, the power it makes etc. The only place where I found a name is on the handle. Bonali.

From a scrap pile to back to duty in about 4 hours of works. Not bad for free stuff ;-)

Looks like the owners of that dog couldn't afford him and sent him down the road.

If you call a few vets, they maybe able to scan the dog for a micro chip to see if he's registered but even if he is and he was sent out into the world on his own, chances are the owners will pretend he got away from them and then do the same thing again in a few days or send him to a animal shelter where he's very unlikely to find an home and would probably be put down.

I say take him in and make him your shop dog!
