Old Merit Screwdriver

Hi guys, I have an old screwdriver that I am trying to identify. It is a 4" long flathead/ slotted screwdriver with a wooden handle. It is simply stamped "Merit 4" BK".

I know that Merit was an early Sears brand, but that's about all I know. Do any of you know when it was made, and by which company? Thanks!

Merit was a sears economy brand back in the 30s. Looks like a bk code? Not familiar with that supplier.

I figured based on the looks, it was from around the 30's or later. Everywhere I've searched online, I can't find reference to "BK" either.

My very similar Dunlap branded screwdriver was only shown in the ‘39 and ‘40 catalog. I’m not sure who was making them. They don’t look exactly like Irwin’s which used smaller headed rivets although the large rivets may have been a Sears requirement. The shape of the shank is certainly reminiscent of Irwin. I suspect that your screwdriver is slightly earlier.

It reminds me of the H D Smith "perfect" screwdrivers and tools, maybe someone bought the license to use some of those design features, or maybe Smith made a run for a large hardware chain or major hardware dealer in a bigger town or city. It happened a lot back in the day.

Even though HD Smith originated Perfect Handle screwdrivers, they were gone by 1930, as far as I know.
