old mystery vise

Found this monster at an estate sale. Lady thought it came over from Sweden with her grandfather but not really sure. . It only works on quick release. Pull it out, put the item in and then push closed. You then have about half a turn to tighten. The shaft only has threads on one end for a short distance and engages another short piece on the top inside to tighten. been researching for a couple of weeks and no luck . Can not find a name or number anywhere.

I'm not as familiar with older vises as a number of other members on Garage Journal.

Massey used to make a quick action woodworking bench vise that sounds like it worked similarly. This is the patent for the Massey woodworkers vise.

Massey also made quick action machinists or mechanics bench vises similar to the one you have. I don't know whether these used the same mechanism.

The body style of that vise has some similar features to some other Massey vises I've seen but it's not identical. This vise pictured on the PracticalMachinist forum may use the same or similar mechanism to the one in the Patent I linked to.

It's also possible that other manufacturers in Europe made similar vises. The body on that vise sort of reminds me of the current Spanish, Irimo made, BluePoint branded vises sold by Snap-On. I believe the Spanish design goes back decades or more, and may have been made elsewhere as well.

Neo: nice post and i saved the Massey pictures because it's close to the Massey i own that i need to restore.

MD: nice find and welcome to the forum. we do have a few vise experts here and i'm not saying i'm one of them, but i have seen a few and not one like yours yet. The styling from the exterior sort of looks like the Wilton bullets, but I know it is a lot older than Wilton's company. that is an interesting screw it has and you say it's a quick release?

have you tried to tighten anything up in the jaws yet? work ok?

i'd lean to European and maybe that's where Massey got their idea. i'm posting pictures of my Massey just so you can see why Neo compared yours to it. you might post it on the main vise thread and say what you know about it and maybe somebody there has a catalog page of it. pretty amazing what some of these guys know and have tucked away or saved on their computers.

Took a closer look and the main threads are about a half turn and are bolted onto the shaft. The top threads are also about 1/2 and are held onto the top with a screw from the outside. When you insert an item you have about 1/2 rotation to tighten the jaws. This has been shown to a couple of tool men and they have no idea of maker. will try to add a couple of pics. Someone suggested going to the vise forum. How do i do that.

MD: you don't start a new thread on an existing thread. all you do is make a post with your words and a bunch of pictures. then keep up with the thread and see if any other member comments on your vise. while you are waiting for that maybe you can start reading the 34,000 posts of vises on that thread.

you'll figure it out. since you are a new member have you started your introduction thread to tell us about yourself? also in that thread you can ask questions about how the forum works or anything and if we can help you we will.

Twertsy: i think Advance is only for editing. all MD needs to do is click on the link for the vise thread and hit POST REPLY at the top and start writing and downloading pictures. or do you mean something else?
